checker-board freeze

Hey just had my box do a funny thing it just froze and now when i reboot it i get this checker-board pattern on the screen and it doesn't go any futher, no red ring just the normal green light!! what type of error is this? can this error be fixed? has anyone tried the xclamp replacement with this or a re flow of the mother board with any success.

any help would be appreciated dave

i would say its a error 102
and that it is not far from a rrod

Yea, cofree's right, its probably 0102, power it off then on a few more times, and you'll get your red rings.

Well i did the xclamp replacement and now its working sweet!! thanks ebay for a £12 console.

I had this same thing happen to my benq 360 this past week after I flashed to LT.

The flash went without a hitch. I then powered up and played my retail copy of MW2 for about 10 minutes. After not seeing any problems, I exited the game and went back to the dashboard. About 5 minutes later, I saw the checkerboard freeze. I shut down and rebooted into the dashboard. Same thing within 2 minutes. However, I noticed that my HDD was not all the way seated, so (stupid me) I pushed it down to seat it and then powered down the machine. When I turned it back on, got the RROD. I'm debating whether or not I caused a short by plugging in the HDD or if it was just overheating. I suppose it could be a mixture of the two.

I'm thinking of replacing my 360, but the benq drive itself seems to be fine on its own. I'm wondering if fixing the xclamps would help or if I should just take my chances and buy a refurb pro HDMI 360 from geeks.com and hope I get a benq again. I suppose if I bought a refurb, I could swap in the benq drive I have, right? Depending on the model, I guess...

Any suggestions?

Venkman, you probably should have started your own thread, but no big deal.

Your RROD wasn't caused by your HDD, or by flashing the drive, it was caused by the system overheating, and it just happened to fail at that moment.

If its been xclamped you can try a reflow if you have a heatgun, if not you can see if you can find someone with a rework station, and have then do a professional reflow on it.

You can buy a refurbished 360 if you want, if its been referb'd and it has hdmi its probably a benq or lite-on. If you buy a new box you can use your current benq to make backups of your games. (Flash 0800 fw)

Thanks for the quick response, HaGGardSmurf. It looks like Geeks.com has a deal on HMDI refurbs with the 203w power brick. It's mostly luck of the draw, but if they ship as indicated then they would have to be Zephyrs and that means there is a good chance it'll be another BenQ. Worth a shot at least.
