xbox 1 compatibility question

Sorry if this in the wrong section.Is it possible any more,to apply the compatibility update thru usb or disc? I have recently felt nostalgic and went to fire up a game,and found I could not play it.I realized,that I had cleared the cache for whatever reason,and now due to the new dash update,I can't go online to do it,not until cw 3.0 is released.I have tried every way I can think of to manually install,but no luck.So,am I doing something wrong,or is it just not possible? i've burned the compatibility update a long time ago to a disc but even after this it wouldn't let me play my old xbox 1 games, originals or backups neither of them would play:(
