man im real new to the psp thing
you have to do the 3.90 update the long way moving the files over and all.
after that all the 3.90 updates you can do with the network.
its my under standing that ever time sony puts out a new full update well have to do it the long way.then all the hack update we can get by network.

i think man.i just did mine last night.
sadalius walked me through it.

Just get the initial 3.90 M33 release, then get the official Sony 3.90 firmware. Extract M33. Rename Sony 3.90 FW from eboot.pbp to 390.pbp and put that into the update folder extracted from the 3.90 M33 file. Then transfer that to your PSP in the /PSP/GAMES/ folder. Then run the update. It requires 78% battery charge or higher so make sure to charge your battery. After the update installs, it will ask you to press X to restart. Go ahead and do so. Then when you get to the XMB (Sony Menu) move to the far left on the menu, then move up all the way till you get to network update and run it. It will ask you about your connection, then tell you that it found a newer update. It will give you two choices. Install now or save for later. If you choose install now, it will do so. If you choose the install later option, you can run the update from GAMES->Memory Stick when you get the chance. Since you have a phat PSP Brandon, you can install the 1.50 kernel addon V2 for 3.90. Just follow the instructions in the readme and put the sony 1.50 fw on the root of the memory stick as 150.pbp, then run the installer from games->memory stick.
