Creating a Backup of an NDS Game Cartridge

Post by sadalius »

I'm sure you've wanted to know how to create your own backups of the game carts that you own. Well, now you can. To do this, you'll need a wireless router that will allow for wireless B, a Nintendo DS with an R4, CycloDS Evolution or other similar device and a PC. You'll also need a couple of programs. One is NDS Backup Tool and the other is SmallFTPd.

You'll need the PC connected through the router either by wireless or ethernet cable. The DS needs to be configured to connect to the wireless router. If you've already done that, then you should have no problems. You might have to forward the port 8080 in your router if you have problems. Also, if your using port 8080 for something else, just edit the ftpd.ini file for smallftpd and change it to a port that you can use, you would need to change the port in the NDS_Backup_Tool_Wifi.ini file to match as well.

Find out what IP address that the computer that your using has. Click start->run and type in CMD and click ok. This will open a command prompt. Type ipconfig and press enter, you should get some information and the IP address should be listed. Make a note of that. Extract the NDS_Backup_Tool_Wifi that you downloaded and open the NDS_Backup_Tool_Wifi.ini file with notepad or other pure text editor and change the IP address to match that of your PC. Save it. Then load the ini file and the nds file to the memory card for your DS. Plug in the AC power because dumping the carts this way can take a while. Boot up the DS and have it ready to run the program.

Now, on the PC, extract the SmallFTPd and run the smallftp.exe file. Its already configured with user data and port information, so just click the button that looks like a play button. You might have to tell windows to allow the program in the firewall. Once its running, get your DS.

Now run the program on the DS. You should get a menu thats in pretty broken up english. If the connection is successful, you should see smallftpd show the connection. You'll be instructed to swap the flash cart with the game cart that you want to dump. After doing so, hit R twice and then hit B and then A and your game will start dumping. It will take a while, which is why you need to have it plugged in.

If you want to backup the game save data of the card to a SAV file, restart the tool, hit B on the first screen. The sav file will dump (this doesn't take but a minute).

Hope this helps!!
