Creating a Pandoras Battery and Magic Memory Stick

Post by sadalius »

I wanted to start this section off by writing a small guide on how to create a pandoras battery and a magic memory stick for the purpose of unbricking/downgrading/modding a PSP. Once you have the magic memory stick and pandoras battery created, you can use the pair on any PSP with any version of firmware. You will have to use an already modded phat PSP to be able to make everything.

Items you will need include:

* Modded PSP with USB cable
* Pro Duo Memory Stick
* A spare compatible battery or Datel PSP battery tool.
* Catb50 Team's Magic Memory Stick Creator v2.0 FULL & LITE
*PC with WIndows XP

First I want to talk about batteries. A decision as to whether to softmod or hardmod your battery needs to be made. To help in this decision, if you only have a slim battery, these batteries can only be hardmodded and also can only be used in the slim PSP. They can not be used with the phat PSP's. The phat battery, however, can be used in both and they can be hardmodded and softmodded. If you only have a slim battery, I would recommend picking up a phat battery from ebay or other retailer that sells the official Sony batteries. You can save yourself the trouble and pick up a Datel PSP battery tool, these batteries are already made into a pandora.

If you decide to "pandorize" your slim battery, here is how you do it. You have to open the battery up. To do this, use a knife to score around where the two half's of the battery are glued together to separate the glue and open the two shells up. Inside you'll find a small circuit board. You'll need to get to the backside of that ciruit board, but you'll want to be mindful of the strips of metal that connects the circuit board to the actual battery. These strips can break easily if your not careful.

There is a small chip that is circled in red in the above photo, and you'll also see a trace that is outlined in a blue rectangle. You can do one of two things here. Either cut the trace in the blue rectangle (easiest to do) or clip the leg of the chip like it is in the photo. Clipping the leg is the more difficult of the two, but either way will give the results that your looking for. When your done, put the circuit board back the way it was and close up the battery with glue or tape. Now, with that being said, if you want to put the battery back the way it was, you would either solder the leg back into contact with the pad, or you can take a regular #2 pencil using the lead and trace over the cut place made from cutting the trace and this will complete the circuit as well.

To hardmod a phat battery, take a look at this photo and clip the leg as shown.

If you followed these steps, you now have a hardmodded pandoras battery. Keep in mind that if you want to restore these to a normal battery, you'll have to reverse the work you've done here.

Now for the easy part. Creating the magic memory stick. You'll need to download this to start with. Extract the contents to your desktop or somewhere you can get to easily. If your wanting to softmod your battery, you'll need to download this as well. Go ahead and extract this and have it ready. Insert the Pro Duo memory stick that you want to use into your PSP, make sure that you backup any important info, or better yet, use one that you can dedicate to this project. On the PSP, go to system settings and choose Format Memory Stick and let it do so. Now connect your PSP to your computer using the USB cable and enable the USB connection. Now, in the Catb50 files, double click the BEGIN file. Then follow the rest of the on screen instructions to complete the creation of the magic memory stick. Once its done, you have a magic memory stick that will install 3.80 M33-5 when used with the pandora battery that you created earlier, that is unless you held off and wanted to softmod a phat battery.

Here is how to softmod a phat battery into a pandora battery. After you created the magic memory stick, boot the modded PSP as normal. Insert the magic memory card, and establish a USB connection to your PC. When you extracted the ospbt 0.52 files, you should find an ospbt_052 folder, transfer that into the folder that you use for homebrew on your homebrew enabled PSP. Most of the time this will be /PSP/GAME/. After that, plug in AC power. Disconnect USB connection. Go into the GAMES->Memory Stick on the PSP and you should see the option for OS Pandora Battery Tool 0.52, run it. Choose the option to backup the batteries eeprom. When that finishes, choose the option to convert the battery to service mode.

Now you have a magic memory stick and a pandora battery set. To use it, from a powered off state and no AC power, insert the magic memory stick, the insert the pandora battery. The PSP should power on automatically and you should be presented with a menu. First order of business is to choose the option to backup the NAND. Once you do that, then you can choose to either install 3.80 M33 or the official 3.80 firmware. If you choose the 3.80 M33 it will be 3.80 M33-5 and not just the initial release of 3.80 M33. If you choose the official 3.80, of course that will install the official Sony 3.80 firmware. At some point, it will tell you that its finished and to press X to restart. Go ahead and do so.

Now if you choose to install 3.80 M33-5, you might have one of two things happen. After it installs and it asks you to press X to restart, it might give you a Blue error screen or a BSOD, if this happens press O when it asks you to and it should continue to load and the BSOD should only happen that one time. The other thing that might happen is when it loads up, you have to set everything back up and while trying to enter the information, it freezes. Turn the PSP off by holding the power switch up until it shuts down. Then release the power switch. Hold the right shoulder button, then turn the PSP on. You should get a menu Choose advanced, then choose format flash1 and restore settings. Don't touch anything unless it asks you to do so. This time, when it boots you should get a BSOD screen, press the O button and it should continue as normal. You'll also want to take out the pandora battery and put in your normal battery as well.

I hope this helps someone that needs it. I'm currently researching a guide that will let you create the magic memory stick without a modded PSP. But that will be a different guide :D Enjoy!!

Working on it now. Thanks for letting me know. It must have not carried over or something, but I'll get it back up in just a little while.

Alright, it should work now. That is a pretty hefty file BTW.

EDIT:

One more thing, once you create your magic memory stick, you'll want to update it to the latest del cementerio which is v8 at the moment. I'm not sure, but I think the latest psp grader will do that for you.
