Microsoft says no thanks to Kinect groping game

Microsoft has publicly offered a "thanks but no thanks" to adult entertainment company ThriXXX, stating that the Australian firm's Kinect-powered sex game will never end up for sale on Xbox 360.

A video (NSFW link) cropped up earlier this month that showed a wily Kinect hacker using hand gestures, voice commands and objects to interact with a 3D-rendered, scantily clad lady. It offered up a working prototype, thanks to efforts in the hacking community, to show off how Microsoft's new peripheral could work in adult games.

The company specialises in interactive sex simulation software on PC, with titles like "3D Sexvilla" and "3DLesbian". It said: "the Kinect interface provides another exciting option for users of the sex simulation software to control the experience in extraordinary new ways".

But when Microsoft caught wind of the game, it was quick to assuage any fears that the games would end up for sale on Xbox 360.

"Microsoft did not authorise or license its technology for this use," the publisher told the LA Times. "Xbox is a family friendly games and entertainment console and does not allow Adults Only (AO) content to be certified for use on its platform, and would not condone this type of game for Kinect."

In fact, none of the primary gaming platform holders -- Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo -- allow games rated AO by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to be released for their systems.

But that hasn't hampered ThriXXX's plans. It still plans to introduce optional Kinect support in its PC games next year, far away from Microsoft's grasp. "We do not sell at retail, do not have a need for [game ratings]," a spokesperson told CNET. "If we have to, maybe we would give it away for free as part of the open-source community efforts, but we don't know yet where any of this will lead."
