between Mobile broadband

Post by xayasitha »

What is the difference between Mobile broadband and Wi-fi? I understand that Wi-fi is accessed free from certain locations, coffee shops, shopping centers etc. So what is the advantage of mobile broadband?

Wifi is a signal sent from a router through the air, and has a range of about 100 ft, depending on the antenna size. Connecting to a wifi network is the same as connecting 2 computers in LAN except without any wires. Most wireless networks have a modem on them which you can use to access the internet.

So if you go to a place with a wifi network, coffee shop, friends house, restaurant, hotel etc, there is a 99.9% chance there is a modem on the network which you can use to access the internet. Sometimes if you connect to a network, but try to access the internet but are unable to, this means there is no router on the network, or you are not alloud to use it.

Mobile broadband is another signal broadcast through the air, but this one comes from cell phone tower's and can be recieved by your mobile phone, or a mobile broadband stick or any other 'modem' designed to pickup the signal. Anywhere you get cell phone service you will be able to pickup the mobile broadband signal.

Mobile broadband is slower than most wifi, but can be accessed anywhere you have cell phone service (so if you live in an urban area, basically everywhere). Mobile broadband needs to be paid for, and requires you to have a modem of some sort purchased through whatever company you like. Most times, you'll need to sign up for a plan which includes a monthly fee, and data cap's and usually includes the usb modem. When you hear 3G, 4G etc those are types of mobile broadband.

If your phone is a smartphone (iphone, android, win 7 etc) your carrier will require you to have a data plan of some sort, which will basically allow you to download x amount of data each month using mobile broadband. When your on a wifi network, and are accessing the internet, whoever's network your on, your using their internet connection that they pay for so it costs you nothing, and does not count towards the data you can use each month.

If your asking this because you have a laptop and want to know if you need mobile broadband, or if wifi is enough, decide for yourself... When will you need internet access, and where will you be? If you will be in location's that wont have wifi, then a mobile broadband router, and a mobile plan would be needed. If you have an android phone, you can use it and connect to the internet through it. (windows mobile will work also)

If your asking because you want to know some info for your new cell phone, use wifi whenever possible, its free and usually faster. You should see about getting a bandwidth monitor app to monitor your data usage, if you go over your data cap, most carrier's will charge you an insane amount of money.
