I'll leave this as iPhone specific because I don't know if this affects iPod users. There's no information I came across which states how the device phones-home so I don't know how the pinging will function. 'Measures' have been implemented into some newer applications that allow for the detection of illegitimate usage. The application sends information about the device -specifically the UUID- and after a specified period, the app no longer functions (effectively a trial-license period).

It's worthy to note that it is stated that only illegitimate instances of applications will ping personal information to the developers...
