J-Tag is not for xbox live, period. So that being said, here are the requirements:

XBXOX 360 with dashboard rev of 7371 or lower.
Some soldering skill.
Patience.
A few parts, readily available from Radio Shack.
Patience.
The ability to follow procedures.
A Beer or three.
Patience.

If your dashboard is updated past the 7371 version, you may try an alternative called the Reset Glitch Hack, which can do the same things as a jtag. It can be used on all Phat boxes except Xenons, and on all Slim boxes except for the very latest (like manufactured in the last month or so).

If all you are after is playing backups off of a usb hd, then the XKey offers the easiest solution, as it is the only hack that doesn't require you to open your xbox. This, as with the others, is not live safe.

The reset glitch hack can be performed on any xbox except Xenon boards I believe. It's a pretty spectacular device even if it is a little expensive.

Kind of, but there is soldering involved.
