Rooting HTC EVO 4G

Post by rkd2398 »

One of the first things that I found out when I got the EVO was that in order to have the WiFi Hotspot available, you have to pay Sprint and extra $30.00 a month. Well I didn't like that and went out on a hunt to find a way around it.

There are several ways to Root the EVO, I used unrevoked3 which can be found here: http://unrevoked.com/#evo

All the links and tutorials are the work of someone else. Only Root your phone if your comfortable with doing it.

Now there are two ways to ways to do it. The unrevoked3 allows you to flash a custom recovery image to the phone, installing the Clockwork mod. The really cool this is that you can do a Nand backup from this. Which is helpful if you are trying out custom roms. The process is super easy, less than 15 minutes you can be done. You can find more info here:http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/ ... unrevoked3

There other option unrevoked offers is the unrevoked forever. Which is a semi permanent root. It allows you to turn the secure permissions off completely. I haven't tried this way so I don't have much more info than what you can find here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever

Once I had my phone rooted, the first thing I installed was WiFi Tether. Which allows you to use you to tether your phone to other devices while using WiFi. Pretty F-ing cool.

I have only had the phone less than a week and can't wait to try something new.

Thats a standard feature in 2.2, were you on 2.2 or 2.1 at the time? Also, after 3.0 or w.e the next major release is (some say 2.5) android is going to have its own special UI, which means the FW will not go to HTC, then your carrier before going to you, its supposedly going straight from google to you. Which SHOULD eliminate any tweak's sprint, or htc or anyone does to the FW so your wifi hot spot capabilitys should be fine.

Also, we should be able to use a wii mote, since we wont be using some old bluetooth profile because of htc sense.

Every time that I tried to use it, it would say Sprint username and pswd not valid error 67. So I called em up and asked and that's what they told me. Now my wife's Ipod Touch could connect, but couldn't go online.

Apparently sprint packaged the FW in such a way that you need to pay for the wifi hot spot.

Thats such a pain in the ass, if you dont want to be screwed around by your carrier, you need to void your warranty and root, then flash a stock/htc sense rom. That alone right there would anger me enough to switch carrier's.

What sprint did was had HTC cook them a special rom. Basically Sprint, or any other provider tells HTC I want my customers to have to pay for this or that, so thats what they do. Sucks when they do that too......
