to play backup game
you will have to have a mod chip installed on the dvd drive.
This is small soldering.so you would need to have a good hand with the soldering iron.

Right now I think most of us would say go with the wasabi mod chip.
I have not used one but it the latest and greatest mod chip for the wii.

yea they are dvd-r not DL disc.

no you are not flashing the firmware on the dvd drive.
what the update dvd disc does is update the chip on the mod chip.
The chip has to stay in/on the dvd drive all the time for it to play a backup.
the mod chip will pickup thats it a backup and then take over and make the wii play the backup.
If you put in a orig game the mod chip just sits there and don't do anything.

There is not a lot out there now.you can have a look at this.

Sadalius is going to be working up a review for the site soon.

The wasabi should work ok for this wii. Although, since this is probably a D2C wii, you might run into the red light syndrome, which can be fixed by following the instructions on the wasabi web site. Other than wasabi, the other choices would be the argon and the d2pro or similar chip. As for if its a 2008 model, there should be a manufacture date somewhere on the sticker where the serial number is.

The red light syndrome has nothing to do with the Wii itself, but a small percentage of wasabi chips are unable to synch with the systems clock frequency unless a capacitor is soldered to the K point and the other end to a ground.

With what Nintendo looks at as far as voiding your warranty, I'm not sure. Technically, as soon as you take the first sticker off the wii, you've voided your warranty. But, if you take your time, those stickers come off and go back on in perfect shape. Depending on how well you can solder, you can install and un-install a chip without knowing it was there as well. Removing a chip with no tale tell signs of being there is kinda difficult though, but it can be done.
