It won't play it stock but, I've read things about DVD playback that kept me from doing it.

The main reason I never tried it was that in order to enable DVD playback the wii must be reading from the disc 100% of the time, working the laser as it was never intended for. When it's reading games, it moves intermittently to access data on the disc as it needs it.

I think this is probably true -and bad for it- but to what degree I do not know. My laser is near-dead from normal use :?

There's a term for this, passive versus active access or something. I think all dvd players work this way. With consoles and computers I've popped games out of the tray before and the game keeps playing for awhile, usually until it hits a loading screen (and then the laser works to read more info from the disc but can't, and freezes). With dvd players and movies, when I take the disc out, it stops immediately.

The Wii doesn't support DVD or Video unless you have whats known as The Homebrew Channel installed.

The installer for this has been updated since I last used it, I will read up just now, but the process seems to have been simplified.

To install this you can use whats known as the Twilight hack, it is an exploit in the Zelda game that uses a hacked save game in order to allow unsigned code/programs to run, this allows the installation of Homebrew Channel.

* Is your console modded?
* Do you have Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Do you have a suitable SD Card?

The console being modded is not needed, it only helps installing the HBC, as you can install from DVD-r

As the above points out the laser will probably have to work harder, but you also have the option of installing media players using the HBC, which allows video playback from memory card. :)

I have it on my Wii, you need to have the homebrew channel installed,

http://hbc.hackmii.com/about/

Information and HBC Download

=== Installation ===

You'll need:
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii version)
- An SD card, at most 2GB in size.
- An SD card reader
- Some homebrew to load

Copy the 'private' directory from the Twilight Hack archive to your SD
card, overwriting any existing Zelda saves or previous
versions of the hack. Find whatever homebrew you wish to
run, copy it to the root of the SD card, and rename it to
boot.dol or boot.elf.

THIS WILL BE THE FILE INCLUDED IN THE HackMii Installer, boot.elf

Then, insert the SD card into your Wii, delete the existing
Zelda savefile using the data mangement screen. Switch to
the SD view, locate the right version of the hack for your
region, and copy it over to your Wii. You must have played
Twilight Princess at least once in order for this to work.

If you have the USA version of the game, you must perform
an additional step; please see below. Launch the game.
Select the Twilight Hack savegame, and load it. Once inside
the game, walk backwards. Sit back and enjoy.

Since there are two released versions of Twilight Princess
for the USA region, these users must first check the
version of their game disc. Take your Zelda disc, flip it
over so that the data side is facing you, and look for
a small line of text next to the inner edge of the disc,
between the raised circle of plastic and the data area. If
the text reads "RVL-RZDE-0A-0", you have a v0 game and
you should select the TwilightHack0 savegame. If the text
reads "RVL-RZDE-0A-2", you have a v2 game and you should
select the TwiilghtHack2 savegame. If you do not select
the correct version of the save, the game will freeze and
the hack will not work.

If you are using System Menu 3.4, you can only use the
Twilight Hack the first time right after copying.
Rebooting the Wii or exiting again to the System Menu
will cause the save to be deleted.

=== Uninstallation ===

Just delete the save from the data management screen. If
you're using System Menu 3.4, then it will automatically
delete the Twiilght Hack on every boot.

=== Changelog ===

Changes for this version of the Twilight Hack:

- Workaround for the System Menu 3.4 check. Only works once
after being copied.

Changes for last version of the Twilight Hack:

- The Twilight Hack is now compatible with version 3.3 of
the Wii System Menu.

- Improvements in video configuration. The entire console
should now be visible in all video modes, and scrolling
has been improved.

- For the USA version, the two variants of the hack have
been packed into one save file. Just select the save
slot that corresponds to your version of Twilight
Princess when you start the game.

- New savegame icons by drmr. The new icons now show which
region that version of the hack is for.

- This version now tries to load boot.dol, and falls back
to boot.elf if boot.dol is not found.

- ???????

- Many, many bug fixes.

============================================================

I have attached the Twilight Hack and HackMii Installer files and 2 media players for use with HBC the new version is 0.61, The top attachement is the player I use at the moment, the botom is the newest and seemingly has external USB DVD Drive support, although I haven't tested this myself.

I'm sure if you see what HBC has to offer your opinions would change, but hey ho each to thier own I suppose.

It is a really simple process, copy a hacked save game, run the game, it auto installs, I have just given detailed instructions.

Simple when you know how.

But HBC opens up a whole lot of possibilities. If you ONLY want streaming vid, fair enough.

A list of SOME of the apps that homebrew channel uses.

I have never done the Twilight hack, but the Banner Bomb can be done in what 15 minutes at the most?

With that the HBC is installed. Which of the apps will play the vid back through the sd?

This will play avi from your sd card.
unrar the file open the folder >apps>mplayer_ce
place the mplayer_ce folder in the apps folder that is on your sd card
I put the avi movie on the root of the sd card
i think you can make a folder just for the movies but i did not try that

restart to the menu and start the HBC pick the mplayer and learn the program
you can navigate to the avi and play it
good picture and sound
just what i was wanting :D

MPlayerCE V0.61.rar
