do you hear clicking? --> place it in the fridge for 1/2 hour and let it thaw, then try spinning it again

do you hear nothing? --> at least you're still alive ;)

can you get to the drive at all? try booting into linux to access the partition...

can you get to the drive but your files do not appear? try recuva to get what you can...

good luck man, that's the best i can think of

From what I've heard, the problem is with the drive's firmware. If the disc or filesystem were bad, the drive would still show up. There is an update for it, but unfortunately, Seagate makes it a little tricky to find.

Look here

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/hardware- ... -read.html

The data is NOT affected, so you should definitely look into this before pitching the drive. You can then use whatever rescue utility to recover the data or image the drive. SystemRescueCD is pretty good, if you're comfortable using Linux.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake,
you just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake.

im not good with linux :( i know its meant to be easy ... but.
i read the same thing about the fw on the drive, i also read that the "fix"
only works if you use it before the drive dies ? how sad if you dont know eh !
iv read about imaging the hdd for backup purposes but have only just heard about it
is SystemRescueCD an imaging tool ?
thanks

sad i got a st31000340as (B) fw sd15
so that fix wouldnt of worked anyway
a flashing frenzy huh huh

SystemRescueCD is a Linux live distro you can use to recover or repair a computer. It has the tools to do what you need. To do the actual imaging, you would use partimage(GUI), dd, or ddrescue.

SystemRescueCD is pretty point-and-click friendly. Check out the quick start guide and the documentation in the links.

You'll have to google around for the correct firmware, I wasn't aware there were multiple versions of it. :(

SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick (does this mean i create a bootable usb like iprep ? to use in windows dos ? OOOOH i hope so

Yes, I believe that you download the ISO, mount it, copy the files to a USB drive, and then run a little script that comes in the image. The USB would boot to exactly the same thing as if you had booted from the CD. It would still be a Linux GUI.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get your data back. :(

100th post! woot! 8-)
