The whisper max fans connect through the power connector of the dvd drive. This to some modders is considered a disadvantage because they believe it is taking some needed power away from the dvd drive. Others feel that its safe. All in all it depends on who you ask as to whether they are safe or not. I haven't done any extensive testing to confirm or deny that it could cause any damage. If this is a disadvantage, then I would see this as its only disadvantage.

The advantage to this fan would be the ability to switch from a stock setting, which is variable speed to a constant 12v. They also provide better air movement than their stock counterparts.

How are they affected? Look at it this way. If you connect a 3v lamp to a 3v source, the lamp will shine bright as it is supposed to. However, if you connect 2 of those lamps in series, each lamp will shine only half as bright because the power source remained the same, but the consumption of the power doubled. It's the same theory thats applied to this max fan leeching power from the DVD drive. Whether the max fan actually affects the performance of the DVD drive, I don't know. Again, I don't have one to test with to confirm or deny but I can cover basic electricity principles all live long day.

it only takes some of the power the drives i have done the mod on are working fine

no man no ones heard if they got banned or not, to be honest its entirely upto you if you want to use whisper fan or not, it has its pros and cons, if you are really unsure and it looks you are its better to leave your xbox as it is bcuz i think you said you have a falcon chip and they seem to be ok.

Well, the only place I read that there was a reported Live ban for a 12v fan mod was on xbox-scene (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=634854" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) 4th paragraph down on the first post addresses it.

thats right man.
the thing is the 12volt fan mod(with stick fans) gets the power from the same place on the dvd power 12v.
so it just like the max fan.
