air to the bottom of the box?
soo I had a RROD 0102. I fixed it. did the x-clamp replacement. 12v fans, air shroud mod.. added heatsinks to the southbridge / ana / and ram on the top of the board. AS7 on the dies. the bottom of the board I had the white foam pads that I kept on. It workd fine for about 5 months.
I got the RROD again..0102 so I changed out the thermal paste / made some adjustments and its back up and running. this time I had to unplug the fans for 2 minutes and then let it cool down before it would work. I've heard you are not supposed to do this but it really was not turning on again. I can play games .. (for now).
I was thinking of getting this : http://coolerguys.com/840556029977.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and adding a fan on the bottom of the box and one on the top. I really think the problem is from the bottom of the board. it gets soo F'n hot!! even on the new falcon chipsets I noticed the bottom of the box gets ridiculously hot.
anyones thoughts on adding a fan to the bottom?

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
i think you will disturb the channel of the air flow as you are suppose to keep the air flow in one direction for maximum cooling. thought adding the fan on the bottom and top may help and help but possibly not by much and if the bottom is getting hot then if you add the fan at the bottom then you will be providing hot air to the motherboard of xbox and making it more worse. if you do want to add the fan at the bottom then make sure the fan is taking the air away and is not obstructed by anything.

I'm talking about adding a fan to the bottom to blow air upward not pull air. RBJtech (he worked out one of the x-clamp fixes) had a site that showed it but its gone now. IDK I'll let you know.. with an added 70mm on the top of the box it runs alot cooler alreadyparminder wrote:i think you will disturb the channel of the air flow as you are suppose to keep the air flow in one direction for maximum cooling. thought adding the fan on the bottom and top may help and help but possibly not by much and if the bottom is getting hot then if you add the fan at the bottom then you will be providing hot air to the motherboard of xbox and making it more worse. if you do want to add the fan at the bottom then make sure the fan is taking the air away and is not obstructed by anything.

I added a USB fan for now.. its an 80mm not 70 my bad. its just to test stuff out / make sure the box works and is stable before I drop some more $$ on it.
I know it looks like hell right now... but it works

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
If you are looking for the 80mm fan that moves the most air, I went through the depths of newegg and came up with these things: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811999612" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I ordered two a couple weeks ago. Be forewarned, they move a ton of air, but they are loud as hell. If your cat's tail was caught in a meat grinder and it was shrieking to all hell being turned into lunch, you wouldn't hear it because of the Vantec fans.
I personally don't recommend these fans, they are simply too loud. They do move a ton of air however. Just throwing that out there if you are interested. Silverstone makes some really nice case fans for PC.

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
haha thats a good explanation! lol. I might roll w/ a 70mm by the CPU heatsink.. and a 70mm over the GPU heatsink.. and relocate the DVD drive outside of the case so it stands on the top of the box as it lays horizontal. then some 50mm fans bringing in air behind the faceplate.Sesshomaru wrote:If you are looking for the 80mm fan that moves the most air, I went through the depths of newegg and came up with these things: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811999612" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

maybe its a lil' extreme.. but I don't want another red light. who knows if my box will come back a 4th time.
Re: air to the bottom of the box?

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
yah for sure! my friend just got one... May 2008 manufacture date on the drive but 2006 date on the actual box. everything inside the box was new. Falcon chipset w/o HDMI in an old case. the lite-ons are def. comingCoFree wrote:its a safe bet if you send it in now it will come back with a lite-on driveJakkTheRipper wrote:who knows if my box will come back a 4th time.

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
This may be more info than you want to know, but if you get a 360 back from repair and it has what looks like a falcon mobo without hdmi, thats actually an opus board and not a falcon. They look identical to the falcon, but no hdmi. Just a little FYI.

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
i dont play any of mine open.
i just do a 12v fan mod.
thats good enough for me.

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
One of my 360s has been open for over a month, simply because after I did one of the wind tunnel (shroud) mods, the case wouldn't close that well and would make a rattling noise from the "wall" card piece that was cut a little too long and must have been touching the fans. Though it is not pretty, I have not rushed to put the case back together and my son prefers it this way as he can put a room fan directly on the 360 (the fan pointed down on the open 360)...and you just *know* it's going to keep the whole thing cool. But I'm with CoFree...as soon as I get the Whisper Max fans in my 360s (so I can go back and forth between 5v and 12v) I'll keep all my boxes closed. (FWIW, I too am a bit paranoid of having the RROD happen to me now...since the LiteOn seems to be what most machines are shipping with now-a-days.)

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
yeah i definitely agree, these lite ons have over run us.
i don't have much hope for them either, but we can always keep hoping.
if my 360 acts up again i think i'm gonna have to either do the 12v mod or order some whispermax fans or something.
do you recommend those cofree ? i mean if wanted a steady 12v fan and didn't wanna mod/solder it an stuff on my own.

Re: air to the bottom of the box?
if you did not want to solder at all.then yea you would have to get the max fan.
doing to solder work on a 12v fan mod is not bad.
your not working around any boards or ic parts.
but any way.
the max is a plug and play as far as i know.
