Modding this this beast

Post by sccrbrandon4788 »

Anything out yet for the PS3? I'm halfway tempted to do it to my Dad's new PS3 (got it for the Blu-Ray drive...).

Not that I'm aware of. I watched the hacking convention video last night and they said that the PS3 hadn't been hacked yet. Sad thing is, is the hackers doesn't seem interested in the PS3, they said it was because Sony already had a Linux and Homebrew solution for the console that was satisfactory so they don't have anyone working on it.

I would imagine it'll be up to the true enthusiasts to hack the PS3.

i'm assuming if there was a way it would be quite expensive to put games on blue-ray blanks anyways, unless they can somehow play on blank dvd+r DL's... i'm just wondering if it's not worth looking into ps3's because of it's so called "bleak future" people keep saying blue-ray has... maybe not worth the time/money.

Nah, no hacks in sight as yet. Honestly, I could care less about the games on PS3, I just wish Linux could make use of hardware acceleration, then it would basically be XBMC in HD with the right codec support. mplayer and VLC in YDL play most SD formats fine. HD will continue to lag without access to the PS3 GPU though. :(

As far as games, blu-ray burners cost a minium of $400 or so and blu-ray media is around $15 per disc. So the only way backups are worthwhile is if it's possible to rip blu-ray to the PS3 HDD and boot games from there.

What you can do is convert mkv to vob with a program called mkv2vob and it will stream, play off the PS3 HDD, or an external FAT or FAT32 formatted HDD with no problems. This is done through the PS3 dash. It's full HD@720p, there is no loss in quality from the source mkv file after converting to vob, and the conversion process only takes a couple minutes. mkv2vob will even split the output vob file to get around the 4GB file limit for FAT systems.

Apparently control of the RSX (PS3 GPU) through Linux was patched with PS3 firmware update 2.01 and it is unlikely Linux will ever support hardware acceleration necessary to play HD files. Disappointing really, since the PS3 hardware is mostly pretty reliable, it could be an excellent media center with more codec support. Also, I talked to a friend who is a guru in all things PS3, he says that any hacks or bootloaders are really a pipe dream at this point, there is no realistic timetable for the PS3 to be cracked.

There was a mod for playing PS2 backups on PS3, involved dissembling the PS3 and soldering, I had a friend attempt it and he couldn't get it to work. There was also an exploit using games available for download over PSN, not sure if they patched that either.

Here is the solder method for playing PS2 backups on PS3. I have no idea if this actually works or if Sony has patched the exploit:

Try it at your own risk!

i heard from a mate of mine who's well in to his mod chip that 'infectus' have a chip that is able to make the ps3 play copies. only prob is that sony took them to court and if they release the data for the chips they will get sued like a c**t.

i dont know how reliable this is as ive not heard anything else on it. ill have a word with him and see how its all coming.

edit: found this on google

I was scrolling some sites and i saw a PS3 modchip!

The modchip was created by team InFeCtUs

Heres the link http://www.infectus.biz/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This modchip supports the PS3,PS2,Xbox 360 and Wii
InFeCtuS is the first versatile modchip ever released in the market, created to work with many different consoles. InFeCtuS will give you access to so many features that it's impossible to describe them all today, some are still in development and more will come in the future, just stay tuned on http://www.infectus.biz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We developed this modchip with an OPEN concept, we use a CORE reprogrammable, a 512kb flash on board and an USB interface for the PC communication.

The hardware has a very HIGH QUALITY component design:
The core of INFECTUS is the new ACTEL ProASIC3 FAMILY, the new family after the famous APA075 used in the past in many PS2 projects.
We used a 512Kb parallel flash SSTSF040, with a high transfer rate and performance.
Finally, we have got a REAL USB2.0 processor. This high quality component can manage the communication between ACTEL and PC (mini usb connector).
All of the chip PLD/FLASH/USB parts are 100% reprogrammable via USB communication.
For security reasons, all of the applications stored in the flash are AES 128-bit encrypted, to protect our work against chinese market!
The project is produced in Europe with the last technology of BSDL testing.

Being InFeCtuS so versatile, we want to show you at least a little part of its features, ordered by console.

XBOX360 SUPPORT:
Allows to gain total access over the XBOX360 flash driver, so that you can read and write the internal flash of any X360 DVD READER in the market.
Everything can be managed with a very simple and user friendly PC software.
FLASH ID realtime patching, your xbox360 cannot understand if there is any flash running other than the original one.
GLOBE MODCHIP 360 100% emulation including ON / OFF LED
NME 1.2 firmware emulation (at work 80% finished). Allow you to install the chip with few wires like NME.

PS3 SUPPORT:
The first work to be done is to allow our users to flash directly the PS3 BIOS by USB. So no more problem with firmwares, you can install everything you want, when you want. All the complications due to firmware versions that cannot be downgraded will not bother you anymore.
This solution will be released in the next 4 weeks!
Another new feature that we want to add is a REAL TIME patching of the firmware part that you want to be emulated from the chip. Being the 512Kb flash not enough to store a real dual firmware, we'll have to wait for the first hacked firmware to understand if a "realtime" patching will be possible. In case we won't be able to find more ideas, a new version of Infectus with a memory expantion bay will be released.

PS2 SUPPORT:
Complete O2 MODCHIP emulation 100% with all functionalities (http://www.o2mod.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) - Included for FREE
REMEMBER THAT O2 MOD ONE OF FEW MODCHIPS IN THE MARKET WITH "DNAS PATCH" AVAIABLE!!! DNAS PATCH IS NECESSARY TO HAVEN'T PROBLEMS IN ONLINE GAMING

WII SUPPORT:

Of course this is a free "bonus" in this mod because, we know, most of You wouldn't install such a big and expensive chip on a WII, but being it free... it's a good chance!
WIIKEY / WIIFREE EMULATION: (under developement - 80% ready). This feature will allow you to play just everything you want on your WII.

SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT:

The possibility to manage the features using an easy software is one of the BIG advantages of this modchip solution!
WIZARD help for the users: you will simply follow software's instruction step by step, everyone would be able to install and manage the INFECTUS MOD.
When you will be ready to install INFECTUS on a DVD DRIVE 078 XBOX360 FIRMWARE, the software will assist you with a 100% automated extraction of the key and the patch of new firmware.
WIZARD configuration based on XML for an automatical update of last firmwares.
X360 FIRMWARE checksum, the software will tell you if you are actually using the correct firmware (this feature is only available in WIZARD procedure)
HELP section to allow an easy searching of X360 firmwares

They claim that their products could lead to the possibility of unbanning X360s :D

And looking at the tutorial for the process of unbanning.... it looks authentic (as well as bloody complicated!) but somewhat pointless. You need two consoles: the banned one and a virgin which "will never be used on Xbox Live". So if the 'donor' console can never be used on Xbox Live after the operation, why not just swap consoles with the person you had the donor off??!!

infectus produce a great product - they really do continue to push the boundries.
However... they are not entry level products, more so targeted @ the specialist market.

Yeah, more of a programmers tool for specialized purposes, i.e. downgrading a system kernel or running unsigned code. That bit about running PS3 backups comes off as bollocks though.
