Replacing M28 drive with M25
Replacing M28 drive with M25
Hi guys
My Samsung M28 drive is faulty so I replaced it with a M25. Basically, I have tried adding in the old key and flashing the M25 with the iExtreme firmware. However, this has now given me an E66 error. Obviously I need the 0800 disc to read my drive again, however, what is the best way to continue from there?
What I am looking for is a step by step process for replacing my Samsung M28 drive with a Samsung M25. I don't have a VIA chipset, but have the key and original firmware from the M28
Thanks in advance

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
did you check the key before you flashed??
always do so in FWToolbox... What chipset/method are you using??
I'm not sure if you need to spoof to ms25, I know once the drive is flashed it becomes a 28, but I'm not sure what FW revision it needs to flash correctly.

read over this

well not sure what to say as i am bit confused on what you have actually done here what key and firmware did you use. was the key good and did you spoof the m25 firmware as a 28 and replace the key in ms25. can you tell us step by step on how you have flashed the drive and stuff

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
When I first flashed the M28, I used the no-VIA way of flashing the drive. This worked fine, however the drive was only reading one game, then I had to turn the console off for an hour before I could play another. From this, I got the original firmware from the M28 drive and used firmware toolbox to get the key.
When I got my M25 drive, I used iPrep to flash my drive with iExtreme 1.4 however, there I didn't put the old drive's key in. Therefore, when I tried to play a game, it gave me "Please put this disc into and Xbox 360" message. After that, it couldn't read my drive to reflash the firmware, I suppose because it is essentially and M28 now??
Anyhows, I thought I would try the non-VIA method on the M25. I input the original M28 key into the ix14.bin file, flashed the firmware and all appeared to complete successfully, however now I get the E66 error.
Now, I'm stuck. What is the best way to flash the M25 drive to make it work in place of my M28?
Thanks in advance

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
well what you've done is not right and you may have bricked the drive. have a look ovver this:

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
That's what I followed when entering the key into the M25 firmware and trying to flash it the non-VIA way.
When using the iPrep method to flash the drive, how do I change the key?

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
FWToolbox, any spoofing, or replacing of keys is always done with FWT...
Now the drive is an MS-28, you'll need to either buy a VIA card, or try the DosFlash method. Have a look at this viewtopic.php?f=63&t=2466&p=14872#p14872
I would try and get a dump of both drives to compare the keys, and definitely check the original dump you flashed the 25 with. Pray that the dump you got from the original drive is a valid key, or you do indeed have a chunky, very powerful DVD player

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
Ok, Dosflashing has worked in the past, however this time I have prepared the ix14.bin file with the old M28's key.
It says that the ix14.bin file is M28 now, is that correct? I used samtool to insert the key from the orig.bin to the ix14.bin and it asked me to copy the drive version. I said yes.....
I think what might be the problem, is that although I copied the key in, it is still detecting the drive as an M25, not an M28....hence the E66 error. I will try uploading the file using Dosflash and let you know how it goes....here's to hope!!!

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
The latest ixtreme firmware is based off the ms-28 firmware. Therefore it will report as ms-28. You shouldn't have to do any spoofing as the 360 allows for upgrades in hardware, but not downgrades. If it was spoofed to an ms-25 while your original drive was an ms-28, this would cause the 360 to throw an error code. Basically all you need to do is take your original firmware from the MS-28 drive and make a copy of it. Name the copy orig.bin and put it in the folder of the iXtreme firmware for the speed that you want, like 12x. Then use the Make iXtreme Firmware file to create your hacked firmware. Double check the key with firmware toolbox. Then flash the hacked firmware to the ms-25 drive and your done. If you've already flash the drive with an ms-28 firmware, then you'll have to use the 10 second trick or other method to be able to flash the drive again and in the future.
Hope this info helps you out some!!

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
Do we think that the DOSflash will work with the above method?
Thanks for all your help guys. Will try it tonight

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
I've never tried dosflash with a samsung, but it's supposed to work. I've always used mtkflash with samsungs.

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
I do my Sammy's with DosFlash and firmware toolbox, on Nforce4 SATA chipset. I don't know what other chipsets will be compatible. I always do 2 dumps with every drive I flash just to be sure I get a good key

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
So do I have to use the 0800 disc if I Dosflash the drive??
I took the original firmware of the M25 drive, iExtremed it and using Samtool, I moved the key from the M28 drive to the new ix14.bin file.
Using Fimware Toolbox, I can see the firmware I need to flash with has the same key as my old M28 drive however also says that it is a M28 firmware version.
I have backups, so was going to use Dosflash to write the firmware. What do we think??
Thanks for all your help

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
If I were dealing with that drive, I would try flashing without the 0800 disk first. Then if I couldn't get it to flash, try the 0800 disk. Only thing the 0800 disk does is unlock the drive so really it wouldn't matter which you try first. For me its just a matter if I have an 0800 disk close by me when I try flashing problematic drives.

Re: Replacing M28 drive with M25
I guess that makes sense, I however appear to have run out of Dual Layers....
Therefore until they arrive, I want to see if I can get it up and running without it...
Its soooooooo frustrating......considering I did it right with my M28 drive first time....things have shagged up this time....
