Unplayable Disc error (FIX)

Post by CoFree »

This is one fix for the Unplayable Disc error.
There are other reasons to get this error. ;)

This is from a repair I did on a 360 dvd drive.
This console is a launch console that as luck would have it has not gave the RROD (Yet)
It was giving a Unplayable Disc error on all disc even dvd movies.

Before you do this repair there is one thing you have to know.
Is the spin motor spinning or not.
I checked this 2 ways.

The first way was to just try and turn the motor with my finger tip.It should turn very easy.
The 2nd way was to put in a disc and start the 360 up.
You have to have a disc of some kind in the drive for the spin motor to start up.
The first thing the laser does is look for a disc.As long as it finds one it will then power the spin motor and spin up the disc.
Put a cd on the spin motor(top cover was off) and turn on the 360.
Quickly turn it back off if the spin motor starts spinning.

This also could mess up the disc so don't use one that you need. ;)

At this point you should have a idea if this fix may work for you or not.
If the spin motor is spinning then there is a good chance this fix will not work.
If the spin motor is not spinning then there is a chance this could work.

You will need a
torx 10 driver
torx 6 driver (can be hard to find)
allen wrench 1.5 (also can be hard to find)
Phillips head #2 driver

Of course the first thing to do is open the console.

After you open it. if it's dusty inside take the dvd drive out, then blow it out with some compressed air.

You don't want blowing dust around the dvd drive.

Now open the dvd drive itself. You do that by unscrewing the 6 screws. The 4 on the outside of the case is for the top cover and the 2 inside is for the bottom cover.

Now you should be looking at the inside of the dvd drive.
You need to be x-tra careful from this point on. ;)
Looking down at the top you will need to take these screws out.

from the bottom you need to take these screws out.

you also need to take out the small ribbon wire on the left.
To get the spin motor out you will need to mover the laser.Put your finger on the brass rod and spin it slow.the laser will move out from the spin motor so you can get it out.

The spin motor comes apart by just pulling the top from the bottom.

I had to put a drop or two of "3 in 1 oil" in the spin motor. Then work it back and forth to get it apart.
Once you get it apart you need to clean it with a small soft(lint free)towel. You want to clean all the spots I marked in red.
On the motor coils them self clean all the coil pads not just the ones i marked.Keep in mind you are not cleaning the coil, you are to clean the pad at the end of the coil.
Make sure to clean the hole where the shaft goes. Its hard to get in there, but you have to clean that well.
I also used a cue tip to clean with.Make sure not to leave any cotton behind.
On the 2nd part you need to clean the shaft well. When done it will be silver.there should be no dark spots.

After everything is nice and clean you can put it back together.
I put 1 small drop of "3 in 1 oil" in the hole that the shaft goes in before I put it back together.
It should spin easy in your fingers.
if so.Go ahead and put the dvd drive back together and test it.

Somethings to keep in mind.

Don't get any oil on the laser
Don't look in the laser.
It is a good idea to go ahead and put a small amount of white lithium grease on the brass rod that the laser runs on.

Hope this helps.
