Homemade Probe/Spear

Post by cyantific »

Saw a thread about this over at xbox-scene and wanted to see what the RHPG members were doing.

I just did this earlier today, took about 10 minutes fiddling around.

I started out with a large safety pin and probably 10" of AWG28 wire. I stripped one end of the wire and wrapped it around right where the electrical tape starts on the left hand side. I then soldered the stripped part of the wire to the safety pin and wrapped tape around it. I took a tip of a pen and glided it over that part and wrapped more tape around that part as well as down the shaft of the safety pin to hold the wire in place. It's not as fancy as some others but should work a-ok!

just make sure you connect it to the right pin....

I spent a few hours trying with it in the wrong pin

You mean on the board or on the power connector? I'm trying to find a diagram on which wires to connect it to on the power connector for the ck3

Here is my question illustrated professionally in photoshop :P

I understand I must cut the wire coming from pit 11 and splice it with the homemade spear? Is 'completing the circuit' fusing the right side with it as well (red/green question marks)? Would love some clarification. Thanks and merry Christmas!

That looks good Cyantific. The correct pin is pin 1. If you hold the DVD power cable to where the ribs that align it with the port on the dvd drive are facing down, that pin is the bottom right pin. If your hold the cable with those two ribs pointing up, its the upper left corner pin. I would take a picture, but I didn't even bring my cell phone with me today.

Actually I have that wrong. With ribs pointing up, its upper right corner, ribs pointing down, lowerleft corner.

Thanks for the info.

I made another probe using a smaller safety pin to ensure it makes a good connection (whenever I get my ck3 heh)

That's a good idea.

Does anyone think that I would have a problem with using a lower gauge wire from my homemade probe to do connectivity kit wire?

I wouldn't use anything less that 22 AWG. Same stuff for mod chips. But that in itself is pretty thin, if you accidentally pulled on it a little hard, you might break it inside the insulation itself.

Yeah I've got some leftover AWG28 wire from some Wii chip soldering and plan on using that. Just wanted to make sure I was in the safe zone, cheers

I actually just soldered one end of mine to the tx on the seriall-ttl converter then I soldered the other end to a desktop staple.

Works great. The staple is small enough to place on the via at r707 without any problems.
