Flashing BenQ without connectivity kit

I had a question regarding the tutorial on flashing the BenQ with iprep 008.8
I was wondering if I needed a connectivity kit to do the half open tray thing. Or if it was cool just to unplug the power source on the drive and then plug it back in.

I'm not sure if it just needed to be plugged into a power source, or if my xbox actually needed to be powered on.
Because when I power it on it just closes back up.

Also, sorry if this question has already been addressed in the forums. I couldn't find it.
