Swapping Drives??

WAs just curious. Have been given a 360 by a friend, whos warranty is out, and he has another 360 that he's using right now. The problem he's had, is that "open tray" error, where you put in a game, but the game doesn't boot. Its an untouched(unflashed) 360 elite fwiw.

I've also got a rrod 360 lying around, which i've applied the x-clamp fix to, but that only lasted a few months, and now just keeps rrod no matter what i do. This console has a flashed hitachi drive.

So i was thinking, if i could take the working flashed drive from the rrod console and simply slip it into the elite console?? Would it work??

well you can do that
but
you have to have the key (other files if a lite-on)from the bad drives
and
put it in the firmware of the good dvd drive
then you have to spoof the firmware of the good(hit) dvd drive to report as the orig drive.

Dump both drive firmwares and keys save them in many spots, then

Open firmware toolbox open the good console's key save it to the hit firmware, then spoof it as the drive that the elite has, although to flash the spoofed Hitachi firmware in is a different story,i don't know if toolbox will flash a hit spoof fw, but you can try Jungle and see if that works.

Yes it would work, just dump both drives, take the key from the console you recieved. Spoof it to the elite's drive, and it will then work.

You can always take the RRoD xbox, and sell it on eBay (with the key). Lots of people will part it out, or are confident enough to fix it.

Done a bit more reading. Maybe i don't have a lite-on drive, i just assumed it was as its a console that has an HDMI. The model no. is vad6038.

So rather than dumping and spoofing and what not, is there any guides out there on how to fix this 'open tray' error myself, then just flash this badboy??

Its a Benq. Are you sure that the drive hasn't been flashed as sometimes you get an open tray if your using cheap media.

No no, it definitely hasn't been flashed. I've been trying legit games on it anyway.

I've come across one of two youtube vids of people apparently fixing the problem by turning some screws on the laser. Would appreciate any first hand experience from some of the old pros on here though before i go messing about.

The method you have seen is known as pot tweaking. It can sometimes do the trick on tired lasers but if your going to try it just go a little bit at a time as you don't want to turn it up too much and risk blasting a laser hole in your ceiling...

Well i tried tweaking the two small nobs ever so slightly and it seems to have done the trick. What are those nobs anyway? And how would i now if they're up too high??

Now to flash the sucker.

I'll do a tutorial search soon, but a quick question, is there much difference in flashing a ben-q compared to the hitachi's??

Balls, read that tut after i'd turned the nobs. Will have to find myself a multimeter to make sure i've not gone too far with them.

I'd recommend not using it anymore until you've checked it with a multimeter as you may have it turned to high which will increase the risk of burning the laser out. A little tweak is sometimes all it takes.

What guide would you recommend for flashing this benQ? I took a look at the video guide using iprep oo8.8, but theres a few things i wasnt quite up to speed on.

is the best way to flash the benq
update the def file in iprep and you should be good to go

I'm not 100% clear on the USB part. And whats the best way to power the drive while i do it? For the hitachi i used that connectivity kit, can i use that, or would i power up the drive through the 360 console??
