Microsoft kills 'coffin' policy, time to pack your RRoD Xbox

Microsoft – the manufacturer of the RRoD-prone Xbox 360 – has confirmed that it's discontinued its policy of providing a prepaid box with shipping label, more commonly referred to as the "coffin," for all Xbox 360 repairs. As of May 26 the policy was discontinued "in an effort to expedite the repair process." Customers will have the option of receiving an e-label to slap on the box they ship their bricked consoles in, but the days of the "coffin" are now over. A Microsoft spokesperson tell us, "Customers can now ship their consoles themselves using an e-label provided by Microsoft and do not need to wait for an empty box to be shipped to them."

Apparently Microsoft's accountants were getting tired of that budget line item signifying thousands of dollars spent on providing cardboard boxes to the millions of consumers with defective units (often multiple times). We likely should have seen the writing on the wall when we recently contacted Microsoft to find out what recourse customers had if customer service wasn't offering coffins.

Advice: Mail it to Microsoft in whatever packaging you've got lying around (remember: they're going to fix it regardless) and save the special, custom-fit packaging they mail it back to you in. Odds are you'll use it again.

I have had to send two back in as many months.
But this e-label system was already in place for me.

I just borrowed a friends box/coffin and shipped it back to them.
I have to admit it did speed things up.

It would be a bit more hassel if you did not know someone with a spare box though.
The box is the perfect size and the padding is handy to have too.

Hah i've got 3 of them for spares..lol. The ones i got back from microshaft don't look like the pic though..Last time i sent an rrod back i put it in a box i got from my mates fish shop which had a nice smell of cod and surrounded the 360 with about 200 plastic carrier bags and used 2 rolls of gaffer tape to seal it. That'll have been fun to open. :D :D :D

I have like 10 of these boxes, I used them for various things. The box is the perfect size for pretty much everything :P

I kind of thought there was something weird going on with their shipping system... I sold my buddy a referb console, and the drive went so we sent it back to M$, and the first guy we talked to refused to give us a box, and when the link in the e-label didnt work I called back and the chick reluctantly sent me a box. :P
