Original Xbox To A Linux Computer

Post by HaGGardSmurf »

Someone was asking how to softmod an original xbox, I think it was commando, so I read a bit about it so I could find an up to date tut... I read something about installing full linux on the xbox, then using a keyboard and mouse and using the xbox as a computer...

I have 2 original xbox's, both are softmodded with unleash x... one is 1.6 and the other is 1.0

Anyways, do you guys have any idea how to install linux? I was browsing xbins, and im a bit confused with what I should be downloading, and how to execute it... (I know how to FTP to the box..)

Ye im crap at soldering too, thats why I did a soft mod ;)

It seems to flash full linux, you need to flash cromwell, then use a live cd, but there is no guides for installing linux...

I booted to linux with a cd, it was pretty cool :P
Now to install it...

You can also install the DSL version of linux, but I can't remember if it requires cromwell or not. Been a very long time since I messed with that.

I am probably going to install XDSL, or Ed's Debian.

I ran XDSL with a boot disk, and its pretty cool ;)

If you want to make the cable you can do that as well, the original xbox cable is just a 5-wire usb. So cut off the end of an usb extension cable, (the male end) and then cut the connector part off the xbox 3in cable and match up the colors. I did the opposite when I wanted to use my xbox controller for my pc.

Instead of cutting the end off the controller, you can splice into it. Add a male USB connector to it. That way you can plug it into a pc, and when your done, still use it on the xbox. Then to add a USB port, there is a tutorial on this floating around the net somewhere, but you can take an old mem card, unsolder the card itself, then solder in a female usb connector to the connector of the mem card and put it all together to where it will fit in the mem card slot. Walah a usb port that you can plug a keyboard into, if you have two mem cards that you can sacrifice, you can have two usb ports one for keyboard the other for a mouse.

Of course you can skip all this and just order an adapter from an online store.

These seem cheap enough: http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/dd-xb-sxxcdusb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yea, I was thinking about making my own adapters, but I dont have that many controller cords. I would need 2, and I only have 3 controllers I think. I may have 2 large controllers somewhere...

I wish they had some of those adapters in stock :(

On ebay the adapters are like 8 bucks each.
