cannot read from drive hitachi 78/79

Post by silvertailke »

Dear Users,

I've got a problem flashing 2 Hitachi's 1 is the 78Fk the other is a hitachi 79FK
I followed podgers tutorial also the textbook butt everything ends up with the same error: Cannot read from drive
Ive got a VIA 6421 Via card i have flashed Samsungs ms25/28's also i'm able to flash the lite-on but this hitachis just wont work:S
Do i maybe have to use other drivers for my via 6421 card i have read something about that on the internet.
The following things work with jungleflasher i put the drive in mode B it will be recognized by windows then i put in the unlock 79 Cd for the 79fk, after that i have used the unlock 79 cmd tool it will say done.
After that i put in an original DVD and windows xp will ask me if i want to play it then i go to firmware toolbox and then i get everytime the error: cannot read from drive

I have read on this forum that there are 2 kinds of Via 6421 an A and an L version how can i see which version i have?

I hope you guys can help me.

Greetings,

Twan

Whenever I've tried flashing hitachi's with VIA, I always run into trouble. Does your motherboard have any sata? The only chipset I have read about being unsafe is SiL, other than that, you should be able to flash hitachi's on just about any sata...

does it do the same for both drives, and have you tried jungle flasher?

do the drives show in your control panel? Once a disk has spun up in the drive, leave it 20 seconds before you try dumping it, that can sometimes cause problems...

Dear CoFree, I'm doing a V78 and a V79 both end up with the same error.
As i know for the V78 you only have to get it in modeB making sure it's detected by the pc and then with firmware toolbox read it out, or with jungleflash both don't work. For the V79 you have to use the 79unlock cd ofcourse and then flash it like its a V78 but also ends up with the error cannot read.

Lilrevuk,
My motherbaord of the pc i always flash xboxes with doesnt have sata, i do have another computer wich has sata cables but there is windows vista on 64bits so i dont think that that will work? i have read alot about problems with vista and specially with the 64bits version.
If you want to i can give it a try on my computer after i will have to install a dual boot with windows xp offcourse.
My motherboard is an ASUS P5K SE don't know if you want to know that? As far as i know there is no Sil on it.

Both drives are showing up in my control panel, and i'm able to play dvd's with it after it's in mode B.
but still no succes. I have tried jungleflasher but also firmware toolbox.

did you try your motherboard sata?

If you can't get it on that, you'll have to try a different pc

I didn't try my own motherboard with Sata because there is windows vista 64bits on, so my question is should it be possible to get it done under vista 64bits? or should i make another partition with windows xp?

Well if your on a 64 bit OS, thats your problem. FW toolbox does not work on 64 bit OS, jungle flasher does not work on a 64 bit OS, and iprep does not work for hitachi's

Apperently if you use toolbox, it will say cannot read from drive, so I assume thats what your using?

You should install XP onto a small partition on your HDD, and use it for flashing/updating/restoring whatever.

Well i have installed Windows XP 32 bits on a new partition but when i start jungleflasher it comes with no via drives detected. I also tried the Slax 2.1 disc but it don't come up with spinning. i get allot of thing but not that. I burned it onto a DVD i don't have got cd's might that be the problem?
Do you think my motherboard is capable? it's a P5K SE Asus.
