Sony has announced it is readying a software update that will allow the PlayStation 3 to run 3D games and movies.

The update will be available for free and requires no hardware update to the PS3 itself, however a 3D TV is still necessary.

"PS3 users worldwide will only need to upgrade the PS3 system software via the internet and there is no need to repurchase the system to enjoy 3D games," said Nainan Shah, vice-president of new platform, planning and development, SCEE.

Sony is investing heavily in 3D entertainment and plans to re-release a number of titles in stereoscopic 3D this year along with a 3D TV.

I read some where that we won't have to upgrade to 3-d tvs....the software and the glasses on a 120 ghz or higher should be fine.....hell I watched final destination on blu-ray in 3-d with those paper 3-d glasses on my ps3 blu-ray player on my 46 inch sony bravia and man I was blown away....I then got the Coraline and My Bloody Valentine blu-rays and the same...it was pretty cool....so I would imagine a 3-d blu-ray with the new ps3 software and real 3-d glasses not the paper ones should be more than fine....I think it will all add up to a pretty cool combo....I mean think of all the money they would miss out on with the 3-d movies and the 3-d glasses if only people with 3-d tv's can enjoy them lol sure the 3-d tv will be better but for all us who won't upgrade in the near future our current HD-TV'S should do the trick! Really I think Avatar 3-d blu-ray will be a testimate to that!!!!!!

Well 3-D is just basically an image on top of another one, one image is slightly to the left and the other is to the right. Then you wear the glasses, the left lense filters out the right image, and the right lense filters out the left image. So your left eye see's only the left image, right eye see's only the right image, then your brain puts the 2 images together and you see it as 3-D.

I wouldnt even think refresh rate would matter, but when I used the nvidia 3-D thing they told us that all you need is an nvidia card, a 120hz (or higher) monitor and the glasses.

Who know's I may be wrong.
