Called the 3DS, the device will allow games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses," and feature backwards compatibility with DS and DSi software.
So far, Nintendo has only indicated that 3DS will be released during the fiscal year ending March 2011, but it's apparently the machine that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata referred to in an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi in January. "[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," he said.
Previous rumours have pointed to a new version of DS being powered by Nvidia's Tegra chipset, with the report suggesting it would launch in late 2010, and another that The Pokemon Company is already using the new hardware, and that it includes motion-sensing.
Nintendo will reveal more of the 3DS at E3, which takes place from June 15.
