just got a 360 off my friend for free because he says it wont recognise his harddrive and has tried other harddrives on it but still nothing,
anyone got any idea what is wrong with this?

Try figuring out if its the HDD or the console itself.
Power on the console and put your ear close or on the HDD enclosure itself, if you can hear it start to spin, thats step one.
You can try the HDD in another xbox see if it works, you can also remove the HDD from the enclosure and plug it in via sata to your computer and see if the drive works.
If you have a spare HDD, try it on the console.
If it ends up being the console itself, I have no idea what the problem would be, it might be a cold joint between the mobo, and the HDD plug. Could be software, maybe an update is needed (unlikely).
You can try a usb drive and use that as a HDD, that will probably work, so you can go buy a 16 gb, and format it, then it'd be just like the 20 gb arcade HDD.
