"Mega hit Angry Birds has been knocked off its perch in the iTunes App Store - by a game created by a 14-year-old boy (with a bit of help from his mum)."
14-year-old Robert Nay's first iPhone game, named Bubble Ball, has shot straight to the top of the App Store's free apps chart - overtaking the previous number one, the massive hit Angry Birds Seasons.
While the smash hit Angry Birds was the product of a studio that has nearly a decade's experience in designing games and a large team of developers, Robert's only help in creating Bubble Ball came from his mum, who lent a hand designing some of the game levels, and also did his washing.
Bubble Ball - a simple physics puzzle game - has been downloaded around 2million times since it launched in the App Store on December 29 (and a version is also available for Android).
Robert, who created his first website at the age of thirteen, created his game using a piece of software called Corona SDK, which lets users create apps in a relatively simple-to-learn programming language. One of the early boosts to Bubble Ball's fortunes came when the software's maker's, Ansca Mobile, picked it as their app of the week.
Robert isn't giving away any details of what he's working on next - although he does suggest that he might be planning some paid-for add-ons for Bubble Ball - with the hope of raising some money to fund him through college.
