I can't get this Hitachi 59 into B mode using SLAX help!!

I flashed several BenQs and Sammys already with this VIA chipset using the Iprep method with USB boot, so I assume that my VIA is gonna work to use SLAX to get this stupid Hitachi 59 into B mode, is that a wrong assumption? I tried turning on the 360 at the same time as PC, I tried turning it on just as the SLAX disk spins up ( I read that somewhere) I tried waiting a few seconds after slax starts, It is the 2.0 alpha, what am I doing wrong guys Im frustrated (I just fixed my buddies red ring box tho so Im proud nevertheless)

I assume you don't have a connectivity kit?

You might try Slax 2.1 frodo edition. It may work better in your situation. You could also buy yourself a connectivity kit. It will put any hitachi in mode b except for 78's and 79's (Slax is a have to for these). Works great on all other ones though!!

Nope no connectivity Kit, and no plans to get one I like trying to do things the hard way especially if it saves me a few bucks
I was actually trying the frodo edition Slax probably while you were posting it lol, no luck with that either theres just no sign of B mode whatsoever, no disk spinning up message nothing at all, I understand there may be something to the timing of powering on the 360 and PC, have any of you used Slax and had any kind of trouble like this?

I've used slax 2.1 for the 78's several times (actually forgot how many times). I've never had any problems. I'm using a via 6421 card, but where we differ in our procedure (more than likely) is that I use a separate power supply with a connectivity kit for these drives. I power on the drive, turn on the PC, insert slax and away it goes. At a certain point, I get a "Spinning up drives" message and I have to eject the 78 (I use the eject on the connectivity kit for this) and then it continues to boot. Then when it reached the login, I test mode b, then give it the restart command, or most of the time, I just reset the PC, take out the slax disc and let it boot into windows. Open up firmware toolbox and dump, verify and flash.

the last v78 i did i had a hard time getting it in modeB off my via6421a sata card.
i went to the onbo sata and it went fine.

The hit drives dont have to have that chipset.They will work with just about any chipset.If you can try a different sata port.

I tried both ports I have only 2, and what is the real difference between using the 360 to power the drive or a connectivity kit, don't both simply power the drive to make it operable? what is the difference exactly? I will keep trying, its not in me to give up but boy this is frustrating. Thanks as always for the help guys

In some cases, using the 360 can provide ready state problems. Some people that flash samsungs or benq's on a regular basis knows what I'm talking about here, sometimes having to vary the time between when they turn off the drive and turn it back on. Using a connectivity kit to provide power eliminates all control that the 360 has on the drive giving more consistent flashing each time. Thats the difference between them and may not be the issue that your seeing. What exactly is happening when you try with the setup that your using?

very tempting but I have boxes of extraneous electronic eqipment I may or may not ever use, why pay extra cash for something that can be done on your computer without extra hardware? Well I make it sound self righteous but in reality I can't afford it, and if I could I'd probably just buy more Verbs with the money lol and keep trying the hard way. I have followed the tutorial exactly several tutorials lol Slax just is not getting the drive into B mode, I hooked up my previously flashed Hitachi using the simple eject unplug method to get it into B mode then restored and reflashed it just to make sure it wasn't my sata having trouble, and that worked fine, I set the bios options to IDE not raid so I don't know what to think, Im looking for an old 1.0 iso of Slax now but I don't think I'm gonna find it. Slax boots just fine and appears to get busy doing all kinds of neat stuff but it gets to the login screen, I check for signs of B mode, am dissapointed everytime when the drive opens after 1 button push when am I supposed to see the awesome disk spinning message and hit eject? sorry for being a penny pincher guys one day I'll make some money doing this and buy one of those Kits one day...

now that you have done a different hit dvd drive and it went fine.
that just makes there is something up with this drive.

fair enough, I did just fix it afterall, it was all F#^%$ed up, the rrod first of all, then the usb ports would not power anything at all, of course that was my first encounter with the RROD so maybe that error causes the USB ports to malfunction, at least it plays original disks and runs lol my friend opened it up to clean it voiding his warranty long ago, so I did save him a bunch of money. Im surprised an amateur like me was able to restore a RROD box haha my friend called and said "Dude my 360 has the RROD, Im screwed" I told him confidently "Don't worry about it man, just bring it over, stop at radio shack and buy me some thermal paste and I'll fix it for you" lmao I was fervently looking for walkthrus while he was on his way over lol and in the end I basically just opened it up, removed the heatsinks, cleaned out the old paste, applied new paste and heated up the GPU till it was practically smoking then let it cool and reassembled it. The RROD was gone and it worked fine. Yeah I couldn't get it flashed but my buddy didn't expect me to do that anyway, so he wasn't disappointed one bit. Ah well you win some you lose some... thanks again guys

bought a pack of resistors for 98 cents and it worked like a charm, and I guess 98 cents isn't too bad lol I just feel like a truely ingenius modder would do it using only his computer thanks again for the speedy help fellas

Buy a XBOXUSB takes out the need to "mode B", it does it for you
