Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
HaGGardSmurf,
This seems to be my experiece with this drive as well. They always say you learn from your mistakes and I sure have with this experience.
While I was about to leap off the edge last night, I am far from done with the modding game. I don't quit that easy. I will find a way but I do believe it will be with a different drive. It will either be with a $20 ebay drive or a buddy of mine has a RRoD'd 360 that he is ready to trash, so I told him I would take it off his hands.
Heck the 360 I have was given to me and I fixed it. It was playing nicely until I decided to flash the drive so I could play my backups.
So I will move forward, and with either drive I get, I will talk to you guys here before, during and after I flash it.
Cofree I appreciate all your help.
I may know something about the RRoD'd 360 tomorrow so that will tell me which way I'm gonna go.

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
that could be the trouble right theresa91899 wrote:I THINK happened is that I downloaded a bad firmware I got from searching google
you may have flashed in a benq firmware that is/was not the right one for you drive and now the flash chip can not erase it completely or something to the effect
i have done a few benq dvd drives

and i have never had one that i could not get the right firmware in and get it working
so much that back in the day klutsh flashed in a samsung firmware in a benq and lock one up bad but got it recovered.
dont get me wrong guys im not saying it cant happen
im just saying there has to be something odd that caused this trouble
Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
It said it was an iXtreme Benq 1.6LT but I couldn't tell you if it was or not...
Might explain the wrong size that the flasher is expecting...
But it doesn't explain the 2 different sizes of firmware readings that I get.
Until i have either gotten the other 360 or the other Benq drive, I am willing to try something when i get home from work tonight.
Cofree, now that everyone has pretty much agreed that it was a bad firmware/keyless firmware, is there anything that you would try to do?
If so, let me know and I will try it when i get home.

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
well if i had that drive in front of me
i would flash in a benq firmware from a different console i have here that is working and see if it would work in that console with a new firmware and key
you see what im talking about
it would be for a completely different benq console
hell i even try to spoof it in a samsung console
i would do about anything to get that drive to read a original game or backup
i also at the same time would take one of the xtra drives i have around and flash it with the firmware from your original console just to make sure it would play also.
that would tell me you do have a good key from your console
man pm me, where are you at.

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
Ok, so I am hoping I have a free 360 when I go into work today...
If I do, I'll be ready to do some work after I get off tonight.
If I don't it'll be about a week before I can order the drive off ebay

No word today on the free 360
Will keep you posted
Will keep you posted
Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
Ok in the meantime while I wait for a different drive....
I was playing around with the Benq and here is some interesting observations:
I am able to fiddle with the drive until I get to a point where it will be recognized by software as a Benq.
Pervious to this here is the info that the drive says when I end up getting it to be recognized as something OTHER than "unparralled flash status 0x70"
Vendor ID: 0xC2
Device ID: 0x11
Name: MXIC(MX25L2005)
Size: 262144
Type: Serial flash with ststus 0x73
I got it to this point and was able to erase it. Other times when it is status 0x70 to won't even try.
I flashed it with the original firmwareand this is the log I got: ( I had to unplug then replug it several times at first to get it to recognize it as the above)

Drive is Benq..
As you can see it says it is a Benq...
So I connect it back up to the 360 and power it up...
1 blinking red light.
So I hook it back up to the tv and turn it on. It shows an E74.
Hmmmmm....
I would have guessed without looking at the tv it would have been an E65 DVD issue.
That got me thinking that maybe I should reflow this thing. (an E74 error is the reason I got this thing for free and still throws them sometimes but usually only when I mess around with it. I have always been able to reflow the xbox and clear the E74 on this box)
So I let it cool and now when I boot it up... E65!
I turned off the xbox and unplugged the sata cable and turn the xbox back on and boom... I get the dashboard
I try to unplug and replug in the power cord and and what comes up?
E74 again...
So could a bad DVD or DVD power plug cause an E74?
What I just experienced seems to suggest that it may.
This was probably the problem with it to begin with.
I'm going to bring it back to my pc and see what the flashing software sees (a Benq or an unknown device) either way I feel I should replace the drive and possibly the cables as well.
Anyones have any thoughts on the above?
Dont put your key on a open board like that man

well
if you are doing this work on a console you are not even sure works right
then you are just wasting your time

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
Sorry about that Cofree... Didn't even think about that.
Well, as I said I got the xbox free and just did the penny trick and presto it was a refurbished xbox.
If I hadn't started messing around with the DVD I would still be playing Assassins Creed right now, but because I was afraid of sratching my disk, I started down this road...
Sometimes I wish I hadn't but now that I have I'm not about to give in. (Just my personality type)
I WILL have a flashed drive allowing me to play my backed up games. I may have been slowed down, but that won't stop me...

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
OK, I am picking up another xbox tomorrow so I will be back to it tomorrow night.
I'm not sure what dvd drive this xbox has, so that will be the first order of business. Then once I find out what it is then find the correct firmware and flash it correctly.
Once I get it tomorrow I will let you guys know what drive I have in this thing and maybe you will be able to help me out.

Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
Well, not picking up the next 360 until Wednesday it looks like so just a few more days of waiting....
Re: Benq drive apparently now has no firmware...
ok, so I got the "new" xbox 360 home.
It had been taken apart and so re-applied the thermal compound on the heatsinks and connected everything up and it gave me the rrod. I rebooted and got the green ring but no picture. Rebooted the third time and it gave me rrod again. So I tried it a 4th time and it booted up and went to the dashboard. I quickly checked the dashboard with hopes high since the manufacturing date of this box was September 2006 but no... the dashboard is 2.0.9199...
Grrrr.....
It was on about 5 mins and then gave me 2 flashing red sector. This usually means it has over heated however, I was able to lay my hand on the heatsinks and while they were very warm, neither one was actually hot. I could leave my hand on them without getting burned. That was actually pretty quick for an overheat scenario. My original one would take about 15 mins to overheat if I had unplugged the fans etc...
Well, this what the original owner was complainingi about (over heating) so I guess it was to be expected. It wouldn't power off so I had to unplug it and while I am typing this I am letting it cool off.
As for the dvd drive in this thing, it it:
Toshiba/Samsung
Model: TS-H943A/MCAH
September 2006
F/W=ms28
Cofree or anyone else care to weigh in on how I can use this dvd drive in my original, replacing my Benq?
Thanks in advance!
Steve
