It's pretty simple. Boot into windows and make sure your hitachi is turned off. You do need the port address of the sata port that your hitachi is attached to though. You can get this a couple of ways, but the easiest is to download iprep from our download section and let it detect your ports. It won't tell you the port addesses there, but if you let it prepare a floppy or a USB stick, then you can browse the disk or stick and open the .bat file thats on the disk with notepad and find your port address.

Once you have your port address, all you need to do is open a command prompt and CD to the directory where you extracted mode-b at and type "Mode-B XXX" without the quotes and hit enter. Keep in mind that the XXXX represents your sata port address. Then after you hit enter, turn your hitachi on.

That should get the drive into mode b without using slax.

On a side note, and a not really related spurt of I wish this would happen, I wish Maximus would work with Podger and combine the mode-b program with firmware toolbox. It would make life a lil easier :D

sadalius wrote:You can find firmware toolbox on xbins. It's also available in our download section. Here is a LINK to it.

Using firmware toolbox seems complicated when you first use it, but its not really that bad. Once you get the drive in mode b, boot your computer into windows. Then open up firmware toolbox. Then click on TOOLS and then Direct Drive Dump (GDR Only). Once you do that, a box will come up where you have to select your drive. Make sure that your hitachi is selected, it should be by default. Click the eject button and either put a DVD movie or an original game in the tray and then click the close button. Wait a few seconds for the drive to spin up and if any autoplay boxes come up, just close them. Then click the Classic Dump Firmware as button. Name it orig.bin and save it somewhere that you know where its at. Make several copies for save keeping or even consider emailing it to yourself. It should dump the firmware at this point. When it finishes, it will ask you if you want to open the firmware. Choose yes. If it asks to check the firmware, answer yes as well.

Check the Key and make sure that its valid. It will be alot of random characters and numbers, not all F's or 0's. If it is all F's and 0's, try dumping the firmware again.

Now click tools, and then select Smart Hack Patcher. Choose ok on the next box and then click the little box with the three periods to choose where to save and name your hacked firmware. You can name it anything you like, but I usually use hacked.bin. Then make sure the rule set it iXTREME14_0036-0059_12x, by default its set to iXTREME14_0036-0059_8x and then click the generate File button. It will generate your hacked firmware and ask if you want to open it. Choose yes.

Then choose Tools and then Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) Differential Flash (Patch). Make sure your hitachi is selected in the top box,

When it gets done, your ready to try it out.

Sorry thats so long, but thats how it works in firmware toolbox. I hope it helps you out!!
Thanks thats a really good easy to follow guide.

Didn't work unfortunately. Got to here.
then check the Use Classic Mode box and then click Read and Detect Differences button. It should read the current firmware and compare it to the hacked firmware. Then display the differences in the box labeled Flash these sectors. When that finishes, click the start flashing button. It should start flashing the drive.
Then this happened. Image

when you make a iprep boot flash the 360 does not need/should not be hooked up to the computer.
this will show you just what to do.
just do the iprep part at the start.

Been trying to download the samsung iextreme from xbins but it says i'm banned for not following the rules. Whats that all about?

Also on the vid, the dude says select the drive your 360 is on, which is "h" for me too, but that not going to show up in iprep as my 360 is not powered on. And...What controller should i be picking? IDE based or SCSI based?

Lots of dumb questions to you guys i'm sure but i'm getting nowhere here. Ready to punch someone or something.

there is no way you want to do that.
flashing is the way to go.
its just giving you a hard time .you will get it.
FunkyMonk wrote:Been trying to download the samsung iextreme from xbins but it says i'm banned
if you download to many files to fast they will ban you for 24 hours.
FunkyMonk wrote:Also on the vid, the dude says select the drive your 360 is on
when i say target drive that is not talking about the 360 dvd drive(its not even hooked up) its talking about the usb flash drive that is "H"
FunkyMonk wrote:Right, man on the video says load the firmware. Seeing as my drive is an Hitachi, what do i i do
it dont mater what firmware you load in it just something so iprep will build your boot flash.you are not going to use the usb flash you just want your port address like sadalius said. ;)
FunkyMonk wrote:What controller should i be picking? IDE based or SCSI based?
you dont want to pick a "IDE" you want to pick the sata controller you are going to hook the 360 later.
that the whole point of this is to get the port address of the sata plug.

I don't think mode-b is your problem. Windows is seeing the drive and so is firmware toolbox. There is some sort of communication problem going on here from what I can tell. Have you tried a different sata cable by chance?
