Advice needed on updating Hitatchi 79fl fw

I have flashed a couple of Hitatchi drives but I have never had to flash over an already flashed drive. I think I would be OK doing it if I had the original fw as the steps look OK and not hard to follow.

Its the fact that I dont have the original fw thats giving me the biggest headache. But like I said above, im not gonna rush things. he should be OK on live for the time being until I can sort something else out for him.

i dont think you have to input a fimware.
after opening up firmware toolbox v4.8
the v78 and v79 dvd drives firmware are in there.

this is driving me nuts.
i wish i had a v78 or v79 here to mess with real quick.

Dalecheesy has listed the correct steps to restore a hitachi. Any hitachi for that matter restores this way if you used firmware toolbox to do it with. If you used the old bat files, then you'd need to use the restore.bat included with them to restore with.

Sadly as I have already pointed out, I dont have the original fw and I am not the person who originaly flashed this console so I am not sure exactly what method was used.

My friend who owns the console said that the guy who flashed it for him mentioned soldering something. I am guessing that it was a passkey or similar device.

Well, what you can do, is download the stock 79 firmware and inject your key and differential flash it. That will put it back to stock. Google for team modfreakz and you'll find what your looking for there. Once you have it back to stock, then you can flash it with the firmware that your wanting to.

Now, after that was said, let me say this. I recommend restoring a hitachi. it just makes sense to me to keep things straight. But I can tell you that I have friends that do not restore their hitachi drives before upgrading to a newer firmware and have no problems. Personally, I restore a hitachi before upgrades, but it is worth noting that I have seen other people to upgrades with out restoring with no adverse affects.

Thanks for all of the advice guys.

Last night I just put the 360 back together and we decided to wait until the IXtreme 1.5 release.
In the meantime he is gonna go on live anyway as I have convinced him that he will be ok once his backups are good.

When the 1.5 fw release comes out then we will probably look at upgrading then. So in the meantime I will check out the modfreakz website and make sure that I have all of the information that I will need when the time comes.

Just posting an update on this situation.

I managed to re-flash this 79fl last night to Ixtreme 1.51

In the Hitatchi IXtreme 1.51 folder they had the missing original fw file called (orig79-4d20.bin)
I used the 79unlock cd method to put the drive into mode b and used the fw toolbox 4.8 to restore and flash the drive.
