since I have to first copy the drive first, do I leave the original in there? I am going to leave it flash with 0800 but I can still use the key in the future if I need to spoof my other drive for anyreason.

thats fine make a copy of that orig firmware .
put it in many places
at least one off your computer.
if you lose your dvd drive key it over you will have a dvd player only.
you dont have to have your key in the 0800 firmware
it will be hooked up to your computer after you flash that in and your computer dont care what dvd drive it is as long as it can mount it in your system.

If i buy a BenQ drive from ebay, do i have to flash in a correct key or can i make one up--i would use it purely for backups.

the 0800 firmware does not need a key it will not be hooked up to a console.
