Do I have to have aready flashed with 1.6 firmware or not?

I don't think so the 0800 is drive specific I just bought a new tsh943 and flashed the 0800 straight to it, with no problems it seems to be working fine, but you may want to wait for someone else to reply to be for sure hope this helps a little.

Yes you do not need the key just to run the 0800 firmware at that point it will only be able to read game disk not play them no more,that is what I think they are considering a standalone FW on the drive to rip your games.
