flashing lite-on l74 question

my brother brought an xbox and wanted me to flash it for him and come to find out it had the lite-on 9 series drive. we were both skeptical about the cutting and soldering so he went out and bought a second one, this time from the pawn shop. this one has the l74 lite-on drive. i thought it was gonna be as easy as it was to flash my benq but yet again come to find out again it isn't. hes getting impatient so instead of buying the ck3 and probe, i seen this guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/767988 on how to build a probe. i powered my drive with my xbox so i don't even have the connectivity kit.

so my question is, being that i won't have a green light, if it isn't completely connected or slightly disconnects while its reading or writing (thats a small spring lol) will it completely mess up my drive?
