LG signs up 3D gaming deal with Microsoft to promote its new 3D TVs in Korea

While Microsoft has remained fairly quiet about the possibilities for 3D gaming on the Xbox 360, it looks like a new deal with LG may well mark a change in the company's 3D strategy for the console.
The Korean tech giant and TV manufacturer LG has tied up a new deal with Microsoft which will see 3D gaming on the Xbox promoted and sold alongside LG's new 3D TVs.


In a statement released in South Korea, LG said it will be marketing its new LX5900 3D TV alongside Xbox 360 3D game bundles.
The 3D Xbox 360 bundles are set to arrive in Korea later in June. No word as yet from Microsoft about any plans for 3D Xbox 360 bundles in the UK.
We expect to hear more on this out at E3 in Los Angeles next month.

I wonder how they will be able to have 3d games on regular old dual layer dvd's I guess it'll be like forza 3 where you need to install 1 disk to the HDD first.

From what I've been reading about this latest 3D stuff, it sounds like the effect is done by skewing the image in alternate frames and playing with the coloring a bit. The GOTY version of Batman: Arkham Asylum is 3D, but can display on an ordinary TV. From their site, it sounds like they apply the effect in the shaders. Shader programs aren't very big, and it sounds like the feature can be turned on and off on the fly, so maybe they don't even need two versions of the shaders....?

Unfortunately, the storage space is probably the least of our concerns. The hardware upgrades are going to be expensive. The 3D feature isn't backwards compatible with existing Bluray players or HDMI capable AV switches. As many as one in ten people are unable to see the 3D effect, and others may experience eye strain, fatigue, or headaches. There required viewing distance and angle may also be quite limited.

This is something that I think everyone should definitely try before buying. You wouldn't want to spend thousands on new hardware and be unable to see the image.
