How much does it take to replace a motherboard on a Sony laptop Viao? My mom's laptop stopped working, so we took it to a place that can fix them. They said the motherboard went out and that it would be 500.00 to replace. Does this sound accurate?

but
yes if you have to replace a mobo in a laptop
it is totaled in my opinion

your best bet is to pick up a new laptop.

Replacing the mobo is easy. All you do is unhook the connections, and plug them into the new mobo.

IE: Pull ram out, remove video card, unhook sata cables. The hardest part is transfering the cpu. Just remove your fan/heatsink lift the clip, then you should be able to lift the chip and transfer it to the new mobo, then put the fan/heatsink back on.

No need to regrease it or anything, just as simple as transfering it.

Hardest part is finding the motherboard for sale. I found a vio mobo on ebay, you can search there and see if thats the one you need.

from the point of view of someone that has a damn good understanding of computers
but
if you dont know how to reload the os on your pc or laptop and all drivers
or if you are not sure about taking the laptop apart
then it is not a project for a do it your self (if its a must have laptop)

that being said
yes it could be a fun project for someone just wanting to learn
do not be upset if it never works again

Well as long as the HDD is transfered all should be fine.

Drivers + OS should work same as before.
