Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
I see a lot of guides for opening and flashing xbox360s, but most seem to glance over the actual connecting of the drive to the pc. I've Found some guides that are a little more in-depth, but they're older and I don't know what parts are out dated (pretty sure you don't have to solder anything just to flash it).
But some talk about grounding wires to deal with a potential excess of power, buying certain types of sata cards for certain drives and "VIA". All of which don't show a hole lot in regards to actually connecting things or why you might need one part and not another.
This all might be because its very easy, but I personally have no idea. I can open my pc but i don't' know which cords im unplugging and then plugging into my xbox drive or if i need to buy anything to make this all happen. Is there a guide specifically for these things? I haven't opened my xbox360 yet, but pretty sure its Hitachi (just from the drive tray) (halo3 edition)

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
i hear what you a saying man
but
what you are asking about is a pc thing (for the most part) not a console modding thing
for most of us talking about pc is to close to work
but
let me see if i can help some
ill give you a few links to look over

http://www.robinhoodsplayground.com/for ... f=63&t=324" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
that being said
now days you dont have to have a via chipset if you use jungle flasher to do your flashing
let me look over your post
ok
that's to say if you have a drive that needs it
8300 and 9300 dvd drive you have to cut traces and do some soldering
here is a link to the guides on the site
some are older but
they will give you a idea and help with question you may have
http://www.robinhoodsplayground.com/for ... .php?f=110" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but
i have never grounded the drive
but i dont work in a area that has or will build up static
i have a ground that i touch all the time when im at my work desk just to make sure.
well via is just a kind of chipset. back a few years ago most peoples did not have a sata port in there pc (now almost all do) so they have to buy a pci sata card to put in it.
it used to be a very big deal on the samsung dvd drives
but it can be a problem with jungle flasher.
so you need to think about what and how you want to flash your drive
i would say give jungle flasher a try.
and then you will need a way to power the dvd drive
i dont use the 360 to power the drive i use this
using jungle flasher will be about the only way to flash it
read and look over all the stuff
watch the vids in the guide thread
then when you have more question post up
dont get in a hurry and take your time
if you are now 100% just post up man

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
Yes, opened everything up and its a 79FL.
So can i just unplug the sata stuff from my PC disc drive and plug that into my xbox and flash it that way?
Dunno if i have the cords to do it othewise.
The one cord in the back of my xbox disc drive isn't wanting to come out, something your supposed to do? any models where those are stuck in? My Halo 3 edition appears to have at least one difference in how the eject button works. It doesn't just come off, appears attached to part of the frame.
EDIT: Tried that, but jungleflasher doesn't dectect the drive. Its listed in device manager but haven't been able to get jungle flasher to detect it.

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
you will need your sata cable hook up to your HD in the pc
or jungle wont work.you wont need a sata plugged in to the cd/dvd drive and could use that i guess
if you have a xtra sata port
just pick up a sata cable and just hook it up like it a dvd drive you are adding to your system
at least for a little while
then if its in your DM
you should just have to click the drop down arrow and change the ports till you see your dvd drive info pull up.

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
The eject button will come off if you pit a flat head underneath it, and pry it off the drive case.
What cable is stuck on the back, the sata or the power cable? (Sata is the black one, the power cable is the one with like 12 wires going into the back of the drive)
If its the sata, just pull it out, it'll come, if its the power cable, you need to be more careful, but usually they need more force than the sata, just grab all the wires, and try to grab the white plastic, squeeze tight, and pull.

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
The HD? It only has one sata port though, doesn't the PC HD need to be plugged into the Mobo?CoFree wrote:you will need your sata cable hook up to your HD in the pc

Thats what i did, i just used the SATA from my pcs disc drive. So its hooked up just like adding a disc drive, only is being powered by by xbox instead of the PC.CoFree wrote: if you have a xtra sata port

I tried that, went through every port in the port properties drop down menu, but it didn't show up.CoFree wrote: then if its in your DM

Are all sata cords red like that? the ones in my PC are all black, could that be the wrong cord, not "cross-wired" or something like that? They look exactly like the one Sata cord thats already in the xbox, only not as short.
Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
you are fine
no the color of the sata cable should not matter
this is the lastest vid we have on the v79
there have never been that many of them around

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
I watched all the videos i could find on here, that being one of them, but none really talk about hooking up the drives.
You said HD though, should I be plugging my xbox 360 disc drive into my PCs hard drive? Leaving the hard drive no longer hooked up to the pc? Doesn't make sense to me, but everything im trying isn't working. Though all the guides are using kits or VIA or something other than just the xbox as power source, could that be part of the problem?

you CAN'T do that
you have your HD hooked up for the pc to work right
you dont need a via to flash a v79
in fact it can/will make it harder to flash it
as long as your onbo sata is working right
and it sounds like it is
if it list your dvd drive in the device manger on your pc
i have never used the xbox to power the drive when i flash
i have always used a kit like in the picture up top in this thread
but
that should not be giving you the trouble of not even seeing the drive in jungle.
is jungle flasher finding any of the ports in your pc
Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
man
i just dont know what to tell you
i have only flash 2 v79 and that was along time ago
i dont have one here to test with
sorry
i would start by hooking up the cd/dvd drive you unhooked
and let jungle flasher find that drive then you would know what port you are plugging in the v79 when you hook it up there
then its a matter of playing around with jungle till you get it to see the v79 drive

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
What do you mean exactly? The hp drive thats in, shows up on every port though.CoFree wrote: i would start by hooking up the cd/dvd drive you unhooked

Re: Connecting Xbox Drive To PC
if you leave your cd/dvd drive hooked up
jungle flasher will see it
that will tell you what port you are on
then when you unhook the cd/dvd drive and hook the xbox drive up at least you will know what port its on
if you are seeing you cd/dvd drive on ever post
then you are not doing something right
each port is a different place that you can hook up a device to your pc
