One of the first things that I found out when I got the EVO was that in order to have the WiFi Hotspot available, you have to pay Sprint and extra $30.00 a month. Well I didn't like that and went out on a hunt to find a way around it.
There are several ways to Root the EVO, I used unrevoked3 which can be found here: http://unrevoked.com/#evo
All the links and tutorials are the work of someone else. Only Root your phone if your comfortable with doing it.
Now there are two ways to ways to do it. The unrevoked3 allows you to flash a custom recovery image to the phone, installing the Clockwork mod. The really cool this is that you can do a Nand backup from this. Which is helpful if you are trying out custom roms. The process is super easy, less than 15 minutes you can be done. You can find more info here:http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/ ... unrevoked3
There other option unrevoked offers is the unrevoked forever. Which is a semi permanent root. It allows you to turn the secure permissions off completely. I haven't tried this way so I don't have much more info than what you can find here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Once I had my phone rooted, the first thing I installed was WiFi Tether. Which allows you to use you to tether your phone to other devices while using WiFi. Pretty F-ing cool.
I have only had the phone less than a week and can't wait to try something new.
