Robin Hoods Playground

Now I'm definitely not a computer wiz but is there a way to replace an on-board video card that has completely crapped out with a PCI video card? I cant boot window$ since as soon as the window$ logo pops up it immediately shuts down. I can boot into the bios and change things but as soon as I try to boot window$ is shuts off. I tried reloading window$ booting from the disk but it does the same thing after the files load.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Can I put a PCI vid card in to replace the on-board without being able to boot windows?

There are PCI video card's but you may have trouble finding one since they are not made anymore. PCIE is what is used now a days.

Also, when you plug in the new card, your onboard video should be disabled.

I may have my names mixed up then. Its for a desktop PC that was bought last year. I was just referring to to the slots on the motherboard on the back for modems and stuff.

Well there are PCI slot's and PCI-E slots. PCI-E slot's have a clip on one side of the slot, that's how you can tell them apart. PCI-E is usually the first slot on your board.

Take a look at this:

(Orange slot's are PCI-E, and the yellow/green one is PCI.)

If your board was bought last year, guarantee it has at least one PCI-E. If your looking for a replacement of your onboard video you should have no problem finding a cheap card.

That picture helped out explained it very clear. Thanx I looked at the board it has both it looks like. Your were saying that when I plug the new one in, it should automatically disable the old one? I think the old one is bad and wont allow it to boot window$. Wont I need to run a disk for drivers? How would I do this without being able to get into window$?

we would just put a card i have in and see
the fact that there would be no plug in the vga thats on the mobo
is what we are after
so that part of the board would not be being used
yes if we have the new card in and it still wont boot windows
then thats a different problem
