you dont need anything on the older hit drives.
your key is on a different part of the chip and stays there.
all you have to do is get the latest hit firmware.
then run a restore and thats it. it will flash in a orig firmware and you key will still be there.here is a video on doing a restore on a older hit dvd drive.

The thing is some of us believe that the 360 could log errors that have happened while you have be playing.
There is a chance of you still getting banned when you go on live.
Doing the restore before is by far the safest thing to do if you are going back on live but its not 100%.

I agree with Cofree, if the console has already logged something (if anything, I'd love to know...) then it wouldn't matter...
I never play backups online nowdays. I believe they take logs from the disks that live users are playing with, so theoretically if you have a copy of a game with a unique CRC32 you should be fine, but that's just my take on things.
It's down to preference of course, but I would update to the latest iXtreme FW and stick to originals for Live.

So if i keep the latest flash 1.4 i believe and use only original games on live i shouldnt get banned (hopefully).

If your tagged your tagged. Playing only originals won't help any. You can only hope that your not tagged for banning.

Thats not how it works. The 360 has enough intelligence to create its own log file. Then when you do decide to log into live, it gives the log file to MS and they decide to ban or not. So not going on Live doesn't have anything to do with it in this situation, its whether you've even played any games that were improperly backed up. And by that I mean, if it were missing any stealth files, if any of the stealth files were corrupt, if the ss.bin hex's out to 360 instead of 359, and the list goes on. Even with all the stealth tools that we have to day, we have no guarantee that every backup we make is perfect enough to not get tagged for banning.
