can i use a external usb HDD format the drive with 360 and use this as a hdd to go online. the way i figure, is one can format a thumb drive and play online why not an external usb HDD for the same purpose?

Yes you can. You will only be able to use 16gb of space.

Why do you want to use an external HDD, there is no benefit from using an external hdd as opposed to a microsoft HDD.

my old box is banned. was wondering if using a different HDD would allow it to access xbl or am i missing something?

Yes it will allow live access.

You can use your HDD from your banned xbox as well it doesnt matter, microsoft doesn't care what hard drive you use. If you use a hard drive from a banned console it's not going to ban your other console. Only issue is the corruption of the profile when you play on the banned xbox.

is can you get a banned console back on live if you change the HD around
then the answer is no

the console ID is banned not the HD

If your looking to gain live access, its not possible on a banned xbox.
