Email warning to those running custom firmware or pirated software threatening console bans from PSN.

Sony has issued PlayStation users it believes to be playing pirated PlayStation 3 software with a stark warning: change your ways or face a ban from PlayStation Network.

In a statement on the official PlayStation blog, Sony said last night: “Unauthorised circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorised or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 system.

“Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 System terminated permanently.

“To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorised or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.”

This was Sony’s first official response to PS3’s well-documented security problems and comes almost six months after the first USB jailbreak devices were released. Its response prior to this was a series of network updates aimed at keeping hackers off PSN, which met with limited success as hackers devised workarounds and exploits to enable continued access to

Then, yesterday evening, Sony began sending emails to those it believes are running pirated software on PSN. According to modding website PS3 Hacks, the email reads: “A circumvention device and/or unauthorised or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation 3 system.

“Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorised or pirated software from your PlayStation 3 system. Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through your PlayStation 3 system.”

The message is clear: go back to official firmware and stop playing pirated games over PSN or we’ll ban not just your account, but your entire console, from our online service. Most interestingly it implies Sony has been busy gathering data for some time, preparing to hit back.

Microsoft, who has been fighting Xbox 360 pirates – albeit in smaller numbers - for significantly longer, does not issue these warnings, and instead outright bans hacked consoles from Xbox Live.

Reports of First PS3 Bans have Begun

According to a popular hacking forum , some users are reporting that they have already been banned from the PSN network for trying to bypass the PSN login. The PS3 Bans seem to have occurred when users forged a login certificate and rerouting the PlayStation's DNS addresses the users claim that they accessed the PSN from a jailbroken device. However, the users were quickly banned by the network. Upon recieving the ban, the users were treated to an error message :
"You cannot use the PlayStation Network with this account (8002a227)"

With Sony's recent announcement, it's unclear if the are banning users for attempting to circumvent the security of the PlayStation Network or they are banning for pirated software found on the console. Perhaps both. The letter below is rumored to be what Sony has been sending out to warn users of the service violations.
Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation(R)3 system have been recently released by hackers for the PlayStation(R)3 system. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of your "System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation(R)3 System" and the "Terms of Services and User Agreement" for the PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity(TM) and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.

In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation(R)3 system. Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation(R)3 system. Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to the PlayStation(R)Network and access to Qriocity(TM) services through your PlayStation(R)3 system
