Email warning to those running custom firmware or pirated software threatening console bans from PSN.
Sony has issued PlayStation users it believes to be playing pirated PlayStation 3 software with a stark warning: change your ways or face a ban from PlayStation Network.
In a statement on the official PlayStation blog, Sony said last night: “Unauthorised circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorised or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 system.
“Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 System terminated permanently.
“To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorised or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.”

Then, yesterday evening, Sony began sending emails to those it believes are running pirated software on PSN. According to modding website PS3 Hacks, the email reads: “A circumvention device and/or unauthorised or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation 3 system.
“Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorised or pirated software from your PlayStation 3 system. Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through your PlayStation 3 system.”
The message is clear: go back to official firmware and stop playing pirated games over PSN or we’ll ban not just your account, but your entire console, from our online service. Most interestingly it implies Sony has been busy gathering data for some time, preparing to hit back.
Microsoft, who has been fighting Xbox 360 pirates – albeit in smaller numbers - for significantly longer, does not issue these warnings, and instead outright bans hacked consoles from Xbox Live.
