Are you trying to flash off of your mother board? If so you need to get one of the sata cards from this list
viewtopic.php?f=63&t=295" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that are proven to work.

Rarely does the onboard sata work. A few people have gotten lucky, but I stress
lucky. The card sales for around $12 usd so if you can't afford that you probably shouldn't try to mod a $300 xbox. jmo

yep.. as jman says - it's all about having the right tools
Without the right tools or trying to take shortcuts you are just giving yourself unnecessary headaches
The via 6421 sata controller is the
"tried & tested" right tool for the job ... simple as / thats why we so strongly emphasize it

Its not that i cant afford it, i just can't buy stuff online. Im only 15.
I read that it might be the usb stick? should i try another one?
And is there another way to read/write firmware through usb besides iPrep?

Ok man, no offense meant. iprep is the preferred method but there are others (I think there is a different method in the tutorials section. It uses the same batch files as iprep, but you have to do it manually). You still have to get the computer to recognize the drive. You can try a different usb drive, but chances are its your onboard sata port that is giving you the trouble. See if you can get an adult to order you one. Tell them you goto have one to get your homework done or something.

Other than that it will be an uphill battle. Not saying it can't be done, but chances are you need the card.
