Problem upgrading ms28 to BenQ

Hi,
I've had a lot of problems with my current ms28 with reading etc. So i ordered a BenQ drive and it came today. The first thing i tried to do was dump the drives firmware using Iprep. but after it read it i got a error about the key. But it still dumped BENQ-OFW and BENQ-CFW firmware. I used 360Drive_Switcher_1_0_1_4 to spoof the drive, but when i loaded BENQ-OFW i got a corrupt error so stupidly i used BENQ-CFW instead. Now after a couple of flashes the dasboard runs with no errors but will not read any disk. Am i right in thinking ive flashed over the drives orig.bin?
Thanks in advance.
Jason

Your correct. It has flashed over the drives original firmware on the Benq, but since the drive that came out of your 360 was the Samsung, you should still be ok. The reason it won't play any games is because of the key. It has to have the key from the samsung injected into the firmware and then it has to be spoofed to report as a samsung ms-28 before it will work properly. Firmware toolbox will be your best bet here.
First, go
HERE and download the original firmware for your Benq. The firmwares that are on this page all have 0's for their keys so you will have to inject your key from your Sammy drive using firmware toolbox. If iprep gave an error about the key when you dumped the Sammy drive, keep dumping it till it gives you a clean key. The key has to be right before it will work. Once you get the key and use firmware toolbox to inject it, use firmware toolbox again to spoof the firmware to report as a samsung ms-28. To do this, click tools->Spoof Firmware and from the list, choose TSH-943A ROM MS28 and then click Apply Spoof. Then close firmware toolbox. Now you have a Benq firmware with the key from your old sammy drive and that reports as a samsung ms-28, rename it to orig.bin. Download the Benq firmware from xbins and extract it. Put a copy of orig.bin into the folder of the speed that you want, I use 12x, and then double click the "Make iXtreme firmware" file and it will create the hacked firmware for you. Rename that to ben-cfw.bin, I think its ben-cfw, it maybe benq-cfw you'll have to check your files to be for sure though. Once you rename the file, copy that to your boot media that you made with iprep in the \backups\1234567\12345\ folder or which ever numbers that you used for your serial, if you didn't use 1234567 and 12345. Then your ready to flash by booting with the media and using the fben command to flash it with.
Hope this helps!!

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I have the orig.bin for my ms28 drive so thats ok. But i cannot seem to find the original firmware for my BenQ drive from the site. On my drive the FW version is 60141D. I googled it but with no luck.

And this is a VAD6038 drive? It won't make much difference after making the hacked firmware anyway so just grab the 64930C version and it should work. The reason I say that is because all the hacked firmware is the same version, just with your key inserted, so once you insert your key into the original and spoof it, and run it through creating the hacked firmware, all should be well with the rest of it. Just make sure that once you create the CFW to check it with firmware toolbox to make sure the key and spoofing took.

Okay,
I followed your advice and downloaded a firmware from the site. I then copied the key from my Samsung drive and put it in the new BenQ firmware and then used the spoof function on firmware tools. I then renamed it to BEN-CFW and put it in the back-up folder of my floppy. The drive got flashed ok, but when i use the xbox the drive acts really weird - i.e. the drive will open randomly and if i can get it to open it closes straight away and when switched off it opens. Could this be because the firmware i downloaded was not for this drive?
Thanks
Jason

The firmware that you downloaded from the site doesn't really matter as long as it was for a retail Benq. The hacked firmware is what matters because all Benq's use the same hacked firmware. When you run the original firmware through the hacked firmware maker, all it does is check the firmware that it is in fact a Benq firmware, gets the key and then injects it into the hacked benq firmware. Its that firmware that gets flashed onto the drive. If you still think that it was the firmware that you downloaded that is causing the problems, you might ask around the different forums to see if anyone has a Benq that is the same revision as yours but don't openly ask for a dump of it if someone does have one. Instead send them a PM asking if they would help you out by giving you a dump of their drive with the key blanked out. Explain the problem as well and if they help people out any at all, they should be willing to help you out. Like I said though, don't openly ask for it or you might end up getting flamed or possibly banned from other forums for doing so. If I had one, I'd give you a copy of it, but I don't.
Did you try the drive out before flashing it? If this is a drive that you bought from ebay or somewhere like that, the drive may have been having problems prior to flashing it. I'm not real sure though.

By jiggling with the cables at the back of the drive i've fixed the weird open/close problem. So the dashboard runs okay now but its gone back to the problem of not running any games original/backup.

If by jiggling the cables it will work and then not work, you may want to replace those cables. They should be tight, and "unjiggleable", pardon the strange word there. That might be the whole problem.

hmmmm... That would tend to make me think somethings up with that drive. Try this when you get the time to. Make a backup of the backups folder on your floppy. Then delete the two serial number folders, only after you've made sure you have a backup of them. Then re-dump the benq and check it with firmware toolbox. Compare the key and make sure that its correct and valid. Then check to make sure that its spoofed as a samsung. Let me know what you find out.

I just dumped the current firmware on the BenQ drive and opened it up in firmware toolbox. The keys are exactly the same as my orig.bin for the samsung drive and it says "firmware spoofed as TSH.....". I just cant see what the problem is.
Thanks a lot for all your help

Can you PM me the key so I can look at it. Just want to make sure that its a valid key. It probably is, but I just want to make sure. You said it won't read originals or backups, check to see if it will play a DVD movie or not as well.
