what dvd drive version

i hope i don't get into trouble with this, i have read a lot about different dvd drives and firm ware. i have a question, do we need a dvd drive with version 3 or will version 1 work? will the samsung and hitachi work even when the ap2.5 comes into play? i understand the lite-on 124,224,324 and so on will work but do they have to be version. 1, 2 or 3? thanks in advance.
