Help needed flashing MS28 with manually patched FW

Hello all,

I've successfully dumped my original firmware using iPrep v0006 - but when it comes time for FirmTool to run, I get a Stack Overflow error. I've done absolutely everything that has been suggested to overcome this error to no avail. So I've patched the 12x 1.4 iextreme firmware by dropping the original firmware dump into the 12x folder and running 'Make iExtreme Firmware', as shown in a tute that I've seen on here (originally posted for Benq drives). So what I have in my 12x folder now is:

What I'd like to know now is how to inject the patched FW into my MS28 using iPrep. I'm sure that I'll get a stack overflow again once the patching is done but I'm not unduly worried about that.

Do I have to rename the ix14 .bin? Where do I paste it on my USB stick, and what other files need to be present before I can run fsam?

Thanks for any help :)

1st of all before you do anything else please check the original dump & hacked firmware in firmware toolbox for

A) a valid key (random string of numbers & letters - NOT all FFF's or 000's)
B) it is the correct firmware for your drive "MS28"

Then we can discuss the rest ;)

Hi and thanks for replying :)

Yes, I checked the dump with FW Toolbox 4.6 - I got a 32 char string of numbers and letters. BTW, I did two successive dumps to two different USB drives and the keys are identical, so I'm 99.9% certain that they are valid.

The firmware I patched should be correct - it is described as Samsung-TSH943A-ms28 - [iEXTREME 1.4-12x] through FWTB4.6

ok - back that up & keep it safe ;)

next ... 'in windows' on the usb drive prepared with iprep >

in the backups directory create a folder : 1234567
inside this directory create another dir called : 12345

copy & paste your hacked firmware to the last dir & rename it to : SAM-CFW.BIN

--

'in dos' boot into iprep & after pressing Y to accept the disclaimer run the command : fsam 1234567 12345

;)

Let us know how it goes

when you did the dump were there other sata drives hooked up in your computer.
firmtool will not start if there is more than one sata drive hooked up.

if you have other sata drives start over build your iprep usb flash, power down.
unplug the other sata drives then boot on the usb flash and do a dump.after the dump, let firmtool run.

if you have to build your own hack firmware here is a guide.
http://www.robinhoodsplayground.com/for ... =110&t=438" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
this is a benq ,but it works the same on a samsung drive.
at the bottom of it is a way to flash it in the drive.

Done and done - going offline for a short while to perform the flash - thanks for your help, it's much appreciated :)

Success! :D

Many thanks for your help - I was 90% sure that that was the way to go, but age has taught me to be circumspect - especially with other peoples' belongings :D

I'd still like to get to the root cause of the stack error though, just so I can put iPrep through it's paces the way it's supposed to work.

Thanks once again :)
