Japan: Xbox 360 outsells PS3 2.5-to-1

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 scored a notable victory in Japan during the week ended August 10, shifting almost 25,000 units to outsell the PS3 2.5-1.

The console’s jump in popularity – it sold 5,359 units the previous week - was no doubt fueled by the release of Namco Bandai’s Tales of Vesperia, which debuted at No4 in the software chart after selling 108,000 copies.

Nintendo’s DS topped the hardware chart, according to sales data compiled by Media Create, overtaking the long-running bestseller, Sony’s PSP, although just 2,000 sales separated the handheld pair.

Nintendo’s Wii was comfortably the bestselling home console once again, moving 38,000 units, followed by the Xbox 360.

The PS3, which racked up just shy of 10,000 sales, held onto its narrow lead over its predecessor.

wowsers - I know that 360's have been gaining small momentum in japan but as I understood it it was nothing major & not enough to challange the ps3, I wouldn't say it's unexpected but it is a turn up for the books

I guess title range & title exclusivity has alot to do with it, since most games are cross format these days, also the xbox is a more all rounded beast when it comes to functions & services like the mighty xbox-live // in this sense psn is just miles off the pace in so many ways!

Tales is a great series, I may actually want my 360 to live again for that one. The series has always been more of a niche console RPG series in the states. In Japan the series is quite big. Let us not forget this is the country where the release of a new Dragon Quest game is a national holiday.

well if they had stocked exactly the same amount of titles on ps3 then it wouldve been a call but though with the price tags and all that xbox wouldve sold better than ps3 anyways, just the figures wouldve changed.
