Hello one and all!
New to the forums, but I have a really important question.
I have just picked up a xbox 360 from a friend. Basically he said if you can get it working you can have it. The DVD drive could read games nore could it open the tray. Now he did flash it with ixtremev1.4 and does not have the orginal firmware. This drive i a ms28.
So I head up ebay and get me another ms28. I attempt to flash with iPrep101 v006 and I can't complete the dSam section as it says BACKUP\xxxxxxx\xxxxx\SAM-OFW.bin No key
Basically I need the key from the old drive for this to work. Or so I presume.
So can anyone help me out?

Yes. You will need the drive key from the firmware of the original drive to be able to replace it. Dump the original one first, check for a valid key, make a few copies of it, then you should just be able to flash that firmware to your new one considering they are both ms-28 drives.

yep
dumop the orig dvd drive
check the firmware with firmware toolbox.to make sure you have a good key.
as long as you do make a few copies of the firmware for safe keeping
then you should be able to flash it in the new dvd drive.

Um, is there a tutorial on here for that? As I don't actually know what you mean (new to Xbox and new to the modding).
And if anyone is wondering why I was posting at 2am its because I come from England

. But this is seriously one of the best modding sites. The others require me to pay for services >_>

Use your original drive first. Use the dsam command on it to get it to dump the firmware from it. When its done, boot back into windows and use firmware toolbox to check the firmware. If it has a valid key, make a few copies of it for backup purposes. Then shut everything down and connect your new drive. Boot with iprep and use the fsam command to flash the new drive with the firmware that iprep created with the original drives key.

You are all legends! Thank you!
But does i matter that the orginal drive has ixtremev1.4 on it?

Nope, won't matter. All iprep does when it dumps the firmware is to save it (in your case sam-ofw.bin), then search the firmware for the key, then create a new firmware and inject the new key and save that (in your case sam-cfw.bin). If you were to compare the two files, they should be identical in every way.

I can't even dump the firmware now.I get to choose the drive. I turn off the xbox, wait for the power block to go orange, I choose XTREME Pri master wait 10 secs then turn the drive on. However it doesn't read. It just sits at Port: 9400, Master/Slave: a0.
I have tried number times for the 10 second trick. But on work.
Anyone know why?

well
play around with the 10 sec some
more/less
you have to get a dump of that drive.
are you using a via6421a or l pci sata card.
like this one.

Is this on the original drive? If it is, try dumping the new drive. If it does dump, it may tell you something about an invalid key, but the whole idea is to see if you have your timing down right and if your equipment is working or not.
I know you said you were having some trouble with your old drive, what exactly is the troubles you were seeing out of it? Does it read disks at all, eject and things of that nature?

well
you could try a different usb flash or a floppy disc
that could be whats hanging it up.

ITs on the original drive. THe drive only reads when it wants to and does not eject.

ok, so I'm assuming that since the drive doesn't eject, you have some way of manually putting a disk in it. You might try downloading from xbins the 0800 iso and burning that to a dual layer and try to put the drive in 0800 mode before trying to flash it. That way you could possibly bypass the 10 second trick if the drive will read the disk that is. You can also try what CoFree suggested to.
