Verizon issued a press release today stating that it has fully completed its acquisition of wireless carrier Alltel. The merger between then No. 2 Verizon and No. 5 Alltel was first announced in early June, 2008.

The acquisition of Alltel will give Verizon an additional 12.9 million customers which will boost its total haul to 83.7 million customers. As a result, Verizon will now be the No. 1 wireless carrier in the United States vaulting past AT&T.

According to the terms of the acquisition, Alltel customers will not notice any interruption in their service or customer support for the new 2-3 months. Customers, however, will receive letters in the mail within the coming weeks detailing the transition. During the transition period, Alltel customer calling plans and features such as My Circle will go on untouched.

However, once the integration of Verizon and Alltel's billing and service plans is completed, the future of My Circle is a bit uncertain. Alltel states the following on its site about My Circle:

My Circle will continue to be available to Alltel customers while they are on an Alltel price plan. At this time, Verizon Wireless is evaluating whether a similar plan will be offered to new and existing Verizon Wireless customers.

Verizon’s acquisition of Alltel is valued at over $28 billion USD.
